Description
Malachite, known in the original Japanese version as Kunzite, is a character from the Sailor Moon anime. He serves as one of the four Shitennou, the elite generals of the Dark Kingdom under Queen Beryl. Often described as the most powerful of the four, Malachite is a shrewd and cunning strategist whose calm and patient demeanor belies a deep well of emotion. He carries a shortsword and possesses abilities including energy attacks that take the form of boomerangs, teleportation, telekinesis, the power to absorb others’ energy, and the ability to create and control youma—monsters created from possessed humans.
In the original anime, Malachite is first seen working alongside Zoisite, whom he both trains and loves. Their relationship is depicted as romantic, with Zoisite often clinging to him for guidance and support. Malachite’s primary motivation is to serve Queen Beryl and obtain the Silver Crystal, but his personal devotion to Zoisite drives many of his actions. After Zoisite is killed by Queen Beryl for attempting to kill Tuxedo Mask, Malachite falls into a deep grief. Despite his sorrow, his loyalty to Beryl remains absolute, and he takes over Zoisite’s mission.
His role in the story intensifies after Zoisite’s death. He becomes Beryl’s sole remaining general and is tasked with capturing the Sailor Guardians and retrieving the Silver Crystal. When Mamoru Chiba, the reincarnation of Prince Endymion, is brainwashed and brought to the Dark Kingdom, Malachite grows suspicious and jealous of the prince’s influence. He is ordered to keep tabs on Endymion, and his resentment grows as Endymion repeatedly foils his plans and shows unexpected protectiveness toward Sailor Moon.
Malachite’s development is marked by the contrast between his controlled exterior and his inner turmoil. Though he appears cool and collected, his grief over Zoisite and his mounting frustration with Endymion push him toward increasingly desperate actions. In his final battle, he attacks the Sailor Guardians at the D Point with a powerful energy boomerang that defeats all but Sailor Moon. She deflects the attack, and it rebounds to strike him fatally. His dying words are a call to Zoisite, expressing his hope to reunite with his lost love in death.
Notable abilities include his iconic energy boomerangs, which can strike multiple targets and are nearly unstoppable. He also demonstrates skill in strategy and manipulation, using youma that exploit innocent humans to complicate the Sailor Guardians’ moral choices. He is the only one of the four generals to be killed directly by the Sailor Guardians in the original anime, and his death serves as a poignant end to his arc—one defined by duty, loss, and a love that transcends his villainous role.
