Description
In the Spanish dub of the original Sailor Moon anime, the character known in Japan as Naru Osaka is renamed Cari Osaka. Cari, a diminutive of Caridad, is a close friend and classmate of the protagonist Usagi Tsukino.
Cari is depicted as a kind, outgoing, and compassionate girl, noted for being self-sacrificing when it comes to those she cares about. Her motivations are typical of a close friend; she wishes to support Usagi and live a normal teenage life. However, due to her proximity to the protagonist, she frequently finds herself caught in the crossfire of the battles against evil forces that plague their city of Juuban. This often involves becoming a target for villains who feed on human energy, making her one of the most frequent civilians in need of rescue by Sailor Moon.
Her background reveals that she lives with her mother, who owns a local jewelry store. Her birthday is January 1st. In the original anime continuity, Cari undergoes notable personal developments that are not present in the original manga. The most significant is her tragic romantic relationship with Nephrite, one of the enemy generals. Unaware of his true identity, she befriends him, and he eventually comes to reciprocate her genuine feelings. This leads to his redemption and eventual death while saving her life, an event that leaves Cari deeply depressed for the remainder of the first story arc. Later in the series, she enters a more stable and lighthearted relationship with another classmate, Umino Gurio (renamed Camilo in the Spanish dub).
As the series progresses, her role in the story diminishes, as the narrative focuses more on the Sailor Guardians and their expanding universe. However, she remains a touchstone for Usagi's humanity. In one instance, she demonstrates a potential awareness of her friend's secret identity, hinting at a deeper emotional intelligence. Unlike the Sailor Guardians, Cari does not possess any supernatural abilities or combat skills, filling the role of the archetypal "civilian best friend" who offers normalcy and emotional support to the heroine. The existence of a younger sister, Naruru, is a detail present in the original manga source material but generally does not appear in the anime adaptations where Cari is portrayed as an only child.
