Description
Jadeite is a character from the Sailor Moon series, known as the first of the four Shitennou, or Heavenly Kings, to appear. He serves as one of Queen Beryl's primary generals in the Dark Kingdom, tasked with carrying out her plans on Earth. His name is derived from the mineral jadeite, and he typically appears as a handsome young man with short pale blonde hair and blue eyes. In most incarnations, he wears a grey military-style uniform with colored accents, which sets him apart from his fellow generals.
As a personality, Jadeite is characterized by his strong ambition, significant pride, and an arrogant belief in his own superiority. He is highly confident in his strategic abilities and often takes a hands-on approach to his missions, believing that no one else can perform his tasks as effectively as he can. This self-assurance, however, frequently borders on overconfidence and leads him to underestimate his opponents, particularly the Sailor Guardians. His arrogance is such that in some versions of the story, it manifests as a condescending and sexist attitude towards women, dismissing their capabilities. He is driven by a desire for power and the approval of his queen, seeking to carry out his duties flawlessly to earn her favor.
Jadeite´s primary motivation is to serve the Dark Kingdom and awaken its master, Queen Metalia. His role in the story is to be the first major antagonist directly opposing Sailor Moon and her allies. Queen Beryl assigns him the mission of gathering human life energy to nourish Queen Metalia and, simultaneously, to search for the powerful Silver Crystal. To accomplish this, he devises elaborate schemes to drain energy from large groups of people simultaneously. He is a master of disguise, assuming various human personas such as a radio DJ, a gym instructor, a shrine caretaker, and a bus driver to get close to his victims. He typically employs a youma, a monster under his command, to act as the focal point of his plans, often disguising them as humans to sell cursed items or provide energy-draining services. As his plans are repeatedly foiled by the Sailor Guardians, his role shifts from a confident operative to a desperate agent whose failures lead to his downfall.
Key relationships significantly define Jadeite's character. His most important dynamic is with Queen Beryl, whom he serves with deep subservience and loyalty. He is often seen bowing or kneeling before her, and he strives constantly to meet her expectations. However, Queen Beryl is a harsh master who punishes failure without mercy. Among his fellow Shitennou, his relationship is most notably with Nephrite, who mocks his failure in the manga and preserves his skeleton to later seek revenge. In the live-action series, Nephrite is presented as a rival for Queen Beryl´s favor. In Sailor Moon Crystal, a deeper layer is added to his background, revealing that he and the other Shitennou were once loyal knights who served Prince Endymion in their past lives before being brainwashed by Queen Beryl. This version also implies a connection with Sailor Mars, as he feels a strange attraction to her and it is suggested they may have had a relationship during the Silver Millennium. Conversely, in the original anime, his notable interaction is with the youma Thetis, who volunteers to help him due to her affection for him.
Jadeite's development across the series is largely defined by his failure and ultimate demise. In the original manga, his story is brief; he is burned to death by Sailor Mars and his skeleton is kept by Nephrite. He is briefly revived near the end of the Dark Kingdom arc, regains memories of his past as Endymion´s guardian, and is then transformed back into a jade stone, which is later kept by Mamoru Chiba. In the 1990s anime, his arc is more drawn out. After a series of failed missions, he is given an ultimatum to destroy the Sailor Guardians. His final, desperate battle leads to his defeat. When he returns to the Dark Kingdom to report that he has learned the Sailor Guardians´ true identities, Queen Beryl refuses to listen and condemns him to Eternal Sleep, encasing him in a crystal and banishing him into endless darkness. This serves as a direct consequence of his repeated arrogance and failure. In Sailor Moon Crystal, he meets a different fate, remembering his past loyalty to Endymion before being destroyed by Queen Metalia, after which his spirit, in the form of a stone, remains to advise his true master.
Jadeite possesses a range of notable abilities common to the Shitennou. He has the power to create and summon youma, often forming them from inanimate materials like clay. He is highly skilled in teleportation, able to move himself and others over long distances or between dimensions. He also has significant telekinetic powers, which he uses to stop attacks, create protective barriers, and manipulate large objects. In one of his most prominent battles, he uses telekinesis to control jumbo jets as weapons. He is a master of illusion, capable of creating lifelike projections, such as making an entire city appear to be on fire. In Sailor Moon Crystal, he also demonstrates cryokinetic abilities, generating blasts of freezing energy. These powers, combined with his strategic mind and talent for disguise, make him a formidable adversary, even if his arrogance ultimately proves to be his greatest weakness.
