Description
Jadite, also known as Jadeite in some adaptations, is a fictional character from the multimedia franchise Sailor Moon. He is one of the four Shitennou, or Four Heavenly Kings, who serve as the elite generals of the Dark Kingdom. As the first of these generals to be introduced, he leads the Dark Kingdom's Far Eastern Division and is tasked with one of the primary objectives of his masters: locating the Legendary Silver Crystal and gathering human life energy to awaken the entity Queen Metalia.
In his humanoid form, Jadite is consistently portrayed as a handsome young man with blond hair and blue eyes. His standard uniform is a grey military-style outfit with red accents, which he wears with knee-high maroon boots. His name is derived from the mineral jadeite, a type of jade.
Jadite's personality and backstory vary across the different versions of the story. In the original manga, he is depicted as being of a lower rank and is occasionally mocked by his fellow general, Nephrite. He displays an attraction to the guardian Sailor Mars, which adds a layer of complexity to their antagonistic dynamic. The classic anime adaptation portrays Jadite as a more one-dimensional villain, characterized by a high degree of arrogance, pride, and a pronounced sexism, as he frequently underestimates his female opponents. He is a master of disguise, assuming many human alter egos such as a radio host, a gym instructor, and a shrine caretaker to get close to his victims. In the live-action series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Jadite is portrayed as the most loyal of the four generals, often vying for Queen Beryl's favor and remaining subservient to her almost without question.
His primary motivation is to serve Queen Beryl and the Dark Kingdom. His methods are characterized by large-scale, entrepreneurial schemes designed to drain energy from crowds of unsuspecting people. These schemes range from selling cursed jewelry and operating energy-sucking relaxation pods to running a brainwashing radio show and hosting a fraudulent talent contest. Each plan relies on a youma, a type of monster under his command, which takes a human form to carry out the deception.
Jadite's role in the story is that of a direct and persistent early threat. He is the first significant enemy to battle Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Guardians. His repeated failures to gather energy or eliminate his enemies eventually lead to his downfall. In the classic anime, Queen Beryl loses patience with him and sentences him to "Eternal Sleep," encasing him in a crystal and banishing him into darkness. In the manga, his fate is more definitive; he is destroyed by Sailor Mars and is transformed into a piece of jade. His skeleton is later preserved by Nephrite, who vows revenge. The live-action series offers a different conclusion, where his unwavering loyalty remains even after Queen Beryl releases her mind control over him, and he is one of the last of the Shitennou to fall.
Key relationships define much of his character. He is utterly subservient to Queen Beryl, though in some versions he competes with his fellow general Nephrite for her approval. His interactions with the other Shitennou, including Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite, range from rivalry and mockery to begrudging cooperation. In the Sailor Moon Crystal adaptation, a deeper history is hinted at, suggesting he was one of Prince Endymion's guardians in a past life and shared a romantic connection with Sailor Mars, which adds a tragic dimension to his role as an antagonist.
Jadite possesses a range of supernatural abilities common to the Shitennou. He can teleport, create portals to other dimensions, and manipulate energy. He is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, sometimes wielding twin crystal daggers. One of his most notable powers is telekinesis, which he uses to a dramatic extent, such as controlling massive commercial airplanes to chase the Sailor Guardians. He is also capable of casting powerful illusions, creating barriers, and using magic in various forms.
