Description
Prince Endymion is a character from the anime Sailor Moon who lived during the era of the Silver Millennium, a distant age in which the Moon Kingdom and the Earth existed as separate civilizations. He was the prince of the Earth and ruled over the Golden Kingdom, a prosperous realm on the planet. Across the divide between their worlds, Endymion met and fell in love with Princess Serenity, the gentle heir to the Moon Kingdom. Because a relationship between the two royal houses was forbidden, the pair met in secret whenever they could. Endymion is described as kind, noble, loving, and strong-willed, and his devotion to Serenity shaped his life and his fate.
During the Silver Millennium, Queen Beryl, under the influence of the entity Queen Metallia, turned the people of the Earth against the Moon Kingdom and brainwashed them, making them resent the long-lived moon people. Endymion was one of the few who kept his sanity and resisted the manipulation. Learning of the coming invasion, he went to the Moon to warn Serenity and fought against his own bewitched subjects to protect her and the Moon Kingdom. In the anime's account of the ancient war, Beryl's power swept Endymion into a destructive vortex, and Princess Serenity followed him to remain at his side; Beryl struck them both down, and the two lovers died. Grief-stricken, Queen Serenity used the power of the Silver Crystal to seal away the Dark Kingdom and to send her daughter, the guardian warriors, and Endymion to be reborn in the twentieth century.
In his past life, Endymion's central motivation was protecting Serenity and preserving the peace between their worlds. This drive carried over into his modern incarnation as Mamoru Chiba, a young man who lost his parents in a car accident on his sixth birthday and who began having dreams of a princess he did not recognize. As the anime progresses, Mamoru is revealed to be the reincarnation of Endymion and operates in the present as the masked figure Tuxedo Mask, searching for the Silver Crystal and supporting Sailor Moon in battle. Within the first season, the Dark Kingdom captures him and Beryl brainwashes him into serving her, and for a time he confronts the Sailor Guardians as an enemy. Sailor Moon, having learned that she is Princess Serenity reborn, reaches him with the power of the Silver Crystal and frees him from the brainwashing. Shortly afterward, Endymion sacrifices himself to shield Sailor Moon from Queen Beryl's final assault, an act that reaffirms his enduring role as her protector. He is later revived, allowing his connection to her to continue through the rest of the series.
