Description
Naru Osaka is the childhood best friend and schoolmate of Usagi Tsukino, the protagonist of Sailor Moon. She is a young girl with short brown hair and blue-green eyes. Her name, written in hiragana, carries the meaning of “become” or “to grow, attain, or reach.” She lives with her mother, Mayumi Osaka, who owns a jewelry store, and in a brief side story of the manga she has a younger sister named Naruru.
Naru is portrayed as kind, friendly, outgoing, intelligent, and popular among her peers. She is supportive of Usagi and often tries to cheer her up, but she is also honest enough to gently point out when Usagi could improve. She hero-worships Sailor Moon after being rescued by her early in the series, and she expresses a strong desire for love and happiness. Despite her ordinary background, she appears to have an unusual tendency to attract supernatural encounters, often becoming a target for Youma and other dark forces.
In the story, Naru functions as Usagi’s closest civilian friend, especially in the early part of the first season. She is the first character to be directly affected by the Dark Kingdom’s attacks when her mother is replaced by the Youma Morga. As the series progresses and the Sailor Guardians become Usagi’s primary circle, Naru’s role diminishes, and she eventually fades into the background, appearing only sporadically in later seasons.
Naru’s most significant personal development occurs through her relationship with Nephrite, one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Dark Kingdom. Under the human disguise of Masato Sanjouin, Nephrite repeatedly crosses paths with Naru, who gradually develops strong romantic feelings for him. Nephrite, in turn, grows to genuinely care for her. After Zoisite discovers this attachment, he has Naru kidnapped, and Nephrite sacrifices himself to save her, dying in the process. Naru is deeply affected by his death and misses a great deal of school. Usagi eventually encourages her to move forward, leading Naru to begin a relationship with their classmate Gurio Umino. This romance continues for the remainder of the series, and the two are shown competing together in an affection contest.
Naru does not possess any supernatural abilities; she remains a civilian throughout the story. However, she works part-time at her mother’s jewelry store, where she gains practical skills in retail and lapidary. Her main strength lies in her loyalty and emotional resilience, as she repeatedly recovers from traumatic events and continues to support those she cares about.
