Description
Kunzite, also called Malachite in the English-language adaptation, is the fourth and most powerful member of the Shitennou, the four generals of the Dark Kingdom. He is approximately twenty-five to twenty-six years old and is distinguished by his long white hair, white suit, gloves, and a flowing cape, making him the tallest of the four generals. He carries a shortsword and is described as having the majesty of an Arabian king. In personality, Kunzite is cold, arrogant, and ruthless. He is highly confident in his abilities and often treats battles as games, toying with his opponents. Across different versions, he consistently displays a strong desire for autonomy and resents being manipulated, preferring to act as his own master rather than blindly serving Queen Beryl. In the 1990s anime, he stands out as the only Shitennou who never wears disguises, who creates all of his youma minions from humans rather than using existing monsters, and who dies directly at the hands of Sailor Moon. His motivations are initially tied to serving the Dark Kingdom and securing the Silver Crystal, but they become deeply personal after the death of Zoisite, his lover in that continuity. Zoisite’s death leaves him depressed and obsessed with avenging his fallen partner, shifting his focus from the Silver Crystal to unmasking Sailor Moon. In the manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal, his motivations are more layered: he was originally one of Prince Endymion’s loyal protectors during the Silver Millennium, but he turned against the prince after arguing over the Moon Kingdom’s surveillance of Earth. When his past memories are briefly restored by the Silver Crystal’s light, he becomes torn between his loyalty to Beryl and his true allegiance to Endymion, which leads him to capture the injured Mamoru rather than attack Sailor Moon. Beryl then reinforces her brainwashing, reducing him to a nearly mindless state. Kunzite’s role in the story is that of the final major antagonist among the Shitennou. He appears after the other three generals have been defeated and takes charge of the Dark Kingdom’s operations on Earth. In the anime, he first appears plotting with Zoisite against Nephrite, and together they collect the seven Rainbow Crystals. After Zoisite’s death, Kunzite becomes the primary threat, attempting to avenge him by defeating the Sailor Senshi. In the manga, he attacks the Sailor Senshi at Tokyo Tower, defeats them swiftly, and nearly kills Sailor Moon before Tuxedo Mask intervenes. He later captures Mamoru and brings him to the Dark Kingdom. In the final confrontation, Kunzite is killed when his own energy attack is deflected back at him by Sailor Moon. After his death, his spirit appears to Mamoru to reveal Queen Metalia’s weakness, a key moment that allows the heroes to end the threat. Key relationships shape Kunzite’s arc. His romantic relationship with Zoisite is a defining element of the 1990s anime, where the two are depicted as lovers and Kunzite is a source of support and guidance for the younger general. Zoisite’s death profoundly affects him and drives his subsequent actions. In the manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal, Kunzite is instead romantically paired with Sailor Venus in creator Naoko Takeuchi’s illustrations, though this pairing was not fully explored in the original story. As a former protector of Prince Endymion, Kunzite shares a complex bond with Mamoru Chiba, the prince’s reincarnation. He also serves Queen Beryl, but his loyalty is often reluctant, and in the live-action adaptation, he openly resents both Beryl and Endymion, showing no true allegiance to either. Kunzite’s development varies across adaptations. In the manga, he experiences a brief moment of clarity when his Silver Millennium memories return, leaving him confused and conflicted before Beryl’s brainwashing is intensified. In the anime, he remains loyal to Beryl after Zoisite’s death but grows increasingly suspicious of Endymion, who often undermines his plans by protecting the Sailor Senshi. In the live-action series, he begins as a soft-spoken human named Shin before being forcibly awakened as Kunzite, whose personality is vastly different: arrogant, ruthless, and contemptuous of others. Kunzite’s notable abilities mark him as the most powerful of the Shitennou. He wields formidable dark energy that he can shape into long-range projectiles, such as energy boomerangs capable of taking down multiple Sailor Senshi at once. He can teleport, fly through the atmosphere, and drain the life energy from humans. He creates youma by transforming humans rather than summoning pre-existing monsters. In combat, he relies on his shortsword and his dark energy to overwhelm opponents, and he is shown to be a highly skilled and strategic fighter. His power is such that Sailor Moon can only defeat him by redirecting his own attack back at him using the Silver Crystal.
