Description
Rainha Beryl (Queen Beryl) is the principal antagonist of the first story arc of the Sailor Moon anime, serving as the commander of the Dark Kingdom, a shadowy organization that operates from a base near the North Pole and seeks to conquer the world by draining human life energy. She is introduced as a cold, commanding, and merciless ruler who directs her subordinates through fear and magical control, yet her entire villainous career is rooted in a personal tragedy: an unrequited, obsessive love for Prince Endymion of the Earth Kingdom.

In the era of the Silver Millennium, long before the modern-day events of the series, Beryl was a human sorceress of the Earth Kingdom. She fell in love with Prince Endymion, but he did not return her feelings, as he was devoted to Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. Her love curdled into jealousy, bitterness, and hatred toward the Moon Kingdom. This emotional vulnerability allowed the dark entity Queen Metalia, a malignant force of immense power, to corrupt her. Metalia offered Beryl power and the title of queen in exchange for her service, and Beryl accepted, leading the forces that destroyed the Moon Kingdom and ended the Silver Millennium. In the anime, her backstory is presented more simply than in other versions of the story: she is portrayed as a lowly sorceress who allowed herself to be consumed by her desire for Endymion and by Metalia's influence, rather than as a figure with a more elaborate tragic past.

In the modern era, Beryl is reborn and regains the memories of her past life after rediscovering Queen Metalia at the Dark Kingdom's headquarters at D-Point in the Arctic. As the commander of the Dark Kingdom, she directs the Four Kings of Heaven, also known as the Shitenno: Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite. She assigns each of them the task of harvesting human life energy to feed Metalia, as well as locating the legendary Silver Crystal and identifying the reincarnated Moon Princess. She punishes failure without mercy, as seen when she seals the failed general Jadeite in eternal sleep. Her forces summon and deploy monsters known as youma, which carry out their schemes and battle the Sailor Guardians.

Beryl's defining trait is her obsessive love for Prince Endymion, which shapes nearly all of her actions. In the present day, this obsession is transferred to Endymion's reincarnation, Mamoru Chiba. After Mamoru is mortally wounded, Beryl captures him and revives him as a lifeless thrall, brainwashing him so that he believes he loves her and obeys her commands. She uses him as a weapon against the Sailor Guardians and orders him to kill Sailor Moon, the reincarnation of Princess Serenity. This relationship is the core of her character: she is not motivated by a desire for universal domination for its own sake, but by the longing to possess Endymion and to destroy the woman who won his heart. Her hatred of Sailor Moon is therefore deeply personal, and her rivalry with the Moon Kingdom has its roots in romantic jealousy rather than ideology.

Despite her commanding presence and authority, Beryl is ultimately subordinate to Queen Metalia, the true power behind the Dark Kingdom. Metalia speaks to her as a superior, demands constant energy, and amplifies her magical abilities. Beryl's power is considerable: she is a powerful sorceress with immense magical capacity, capable of channeling the stolen life energy of countless humans into Metalia. She can also corrupt others into her service, exercise mind control, and manipulate events from her headquarters through a crystal ball, observing her enemies and issuing orders to her generals across great distances. In the final confrontation, she demonstrates more direct combat ability when she merges her physical form with Queen Metalia, transforming into an enhanced being known as Super Beryl in a desperate attempt to gain enough power to defeat her enemies.

Beryl's development across the story is largely a descent into desperation. She begins as a confident and intimidating commander, but as her plans fail, the Sailor Guardians grow stronger, and her hold over Mamoru weakens, she becomes increasingly frantic. Her downfall comes when Mamoru breaks free of her brainwashing and fatally wounds her, choosing Sailor Moon over the false love she imposed on him. Having lost the object of her obsession and everything she had built, she begs Metalia for more power, and Metalia responds by possessing her body, merging with her into a single monstrous being. Sailor Moon, awakened as Princess Serenity, ultimately obliterates Beryl along with Metalia, destroying them both.

Beryl also stands as a narrative opposite to Queen Serenity. Where Queen Serenity rules with compassion and selflessness and ultimately sacrifices herself to save her daughter and the guardians, Beryl is ruled by selfish desire, destructive jealousy, and a willingness to destroy entire kingdoms to satisfy her longing. In her relationships with her generals, she is demanding and controlling, keeping them bound to her will, and in her relationship with Metalia she is both servant and victim, a figure who sought power to win love but was consumed by the darkness she accepted. Her story carries a tragic dimension: she is a villain of her own making, yet also someone corrupted by an entity that exploited her pain, and her end is defined by the emptiness of her victory when the love she craved is denied to her, as Endymion's reincarnation chooses death and freedom over her.
