Description
Darien, known in the original Japanese version as Mamoru Chiba, is a central character who serves as the civilian identity behind the masked hero Tuxedo Mask. He is the reincarnation of Prince Endymion, the Earth-born prince from the ancient Moon Kingdom, and is destined to be the partner of the series' protagonist, Sailor Moon.

Darien's past is marked by tragedy. When he was six years old, he lost his parents in a car accident, an event that also caused him to lose all his memories of his early childhood. Growing up as an orphan, he became a highly intelligent, responsible, and independent young man, though he often kept a certain distance from others. He is a top student with a particular fondness for physics, and his long-term dream is to become a doctor. His personal tastes include a love of reading and a preference for chocolate, while he notably has a fear of needles.

In his daily life, Darien initially comes across as arrogant, cold, and sarcastic, often teasing his classmate Serena by calling her meatball head. However, underneath this aloof exterior lies a deeply caring, passionate, and loyal individual. As his relationship with Serena develops, he becomes her most steadfast supporter, showing great patience and romantic devotion, even if he is occasionally self-centered or struggles to express himself.

Unbeknownst to him at first, Darien is driven by a subconscious mission to protect Sailor Moon and recover his lost memories. He transforms into Tuxedo Mask, a mysterious vigilante in a tuxedo, cape, and mask, who arrives to aid the Sailor Guardians whenever they are in danger. In this role, he is famous for throwing sharpened red roses to disarm or distract enemies, and he wields a cane that can extend to any length for use as a weapon or a tool. His primary function in battle is to provide crucial support, words of encouragement, and tactical diversions rather than delivering finishing blows.

His primary motivation during the first story arc is to find the Silver Crystal. He is plagued by recurring dreams of a princess and a command to locate this artifact, believing it holds the key to unlocking his forgotten past. This quest leads him to discover that he is the reincarnated Prince Endymion and that his princess is Serena, the reincarnation of Princess Serenity. Their relationship is the heart of the story. What begins as petty bickering deepens into an eternal romance, as they are fated lovers from a previous life. In the distant future, he becomes King Endymion, the ruler of Crystal Tokyo, husband to the Neo-Queen Serenity, and father to their daughter, Rini.

Throughout the series, Darien undergoes significant trials. After discovering his identity, he is captured and brainwashed by the evil Queen Beryl to serve the Negaverse, which creates a doppelgänger known as the Moonlight Knight from his pure subconscious to protect Sailor Moon in his absence. He ultimately sacrifices himself to save Serena and is later reborn with no memory of his previous life, forcing him to re-earn his memories and reconcile his two personas. He faces further ordeals, including being cursed and imprisoned by the villain Nehelenia and having his Star Seed taken by the final adversary, Galaxia. Despite these repeated hardships, he consistently returns to Serena's side.

As the Prince of the Earth, Darien possesses innate abilities tied to his past life. His most prominent power is psychometry, which manifests as the ability to see into dreams, heal others, and transfer energy through touch. In the manga, his counterpart is depicted as the equivalent of a Guardian for Earth and wields the Golden Crystal, mirroring Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal, though this is less prominent in the anime adaptation.
