Description
Jedite, also known as Jadeite, is a fictional character from the Sailor Moon anime and manga series. He serves as the first of the four Shitennou, or Four Heavenly Kings, who are the elite generals serving Queen Beryl of the Dark Kingdom. Deriving his name from the mineral jadeite, he is the first major antagonist to appear and challenge the Sailor Guardians.
In the original anime adaptation, Jedite is primarily focused on the task of gathering human energy to awaken the kingdom’s master, Queen Metalia. His methods often involve observing human behavior and devising schemes to drain energy from large groups of people. He frequently uses a youma, a type of monster, which he dispatches to take on a human disguise and charge objects or services with dark energy. His plans in the anime include operating a radio station that gives out energy-draining flowers, running a fitness club with energy-sucking pods, and selling cursed jewellery or clocks. He is portrayed as confident and handsome, using his charisma to further his plots. However, this confidence borders on arrogance and pride, leading him to underestimate his enemies, particularly Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Guardians who consistently foil his operations.
Jedite’s role in the story is to serve as the initial threat that the emerging Sailor Guardians must overcome. He represents the first real test of their abilities. In the original anime, he is shown to be ambitious and eager to please Queen Beryl, though his repeated failures cause her to lose patience with him. His primary motivation is to serve the Dark Kingdom and fulfill his assigned duties, driven by a mix of duty, fear of his queen, and personal pride. One of his most notable characteristics is his skill as a master of disguise, assuming numerous human alter egos such as a radio host named J-Dite, a gym instructor, and a caretaker at a temple to get close to his victims.
Regarding his relationships, Jedite is subservient to Queen Beryl, to whom he reports regularly. He has a rivalrous relationship with his fellow general, Nephrite, who mocks him. In a subplot unique to the original anime, Jedite works with a youma named Thetis, who has affection for him, on a scheme to drain energy from a cruise ship. This plan ultimately fails, and Thetis’s destruction further angers Queen Beryl.
Jedite’s development culminates in his final mission. After a string of failures, an enraged Queen Beryl gives him an ultimatum: destroy the Sailor Guardians or be condemned to "Eternal Sleep," a fate described as worse than death. In a desperate gamble, Jedite challenges the Sailor Guardians to a duel at Haneda Airport, creating illusions to threaten Tokyo and force them to appear. During the battle, he demonstrates notable abilities, including powerful telekinesis, which he uses to control jumbo jets and chase the Sailor Guardians, as well as the power to create illusions. Despite learning the true identities of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars, he is defeated by their combined strategy. Upon his failed return to the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl refuses to hear his report and sentences him to Eternal Sleep, freezing him in a crystal and casting him into an endless darkness from which he never returns. His demise serves as a warning to the other generals about the consequences of failure.
The character varies in other adaptations. In the original manga, his role is shorter, and he is killed by Sailor Mars, with his remains becoming a piece of jadeite. In the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot, which follows the manga more closely, he is given a more tragic backstory, revealing he was once a loyal guardian to the Earth's prince, Prince Endymion, before being brainwashed by Queen Metalia. In this version, he shares a past connection with Sailor Mars. The live-action series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, also portrays him as deeply loyal to Queen Beryl.
