TV-Series
Description
Big Blue is a significant supporting character from the Monster Rancher anime, known for his imposing presence and deep loyalty. Physically, he is a sub-breed of Golem, distinguished by his massive stature and a body composed of a special blue-tinted substance often described as ice rock, a frozen material that remains at freezing temperatures even in hot climates. His design is a palette swap of the standard Golem, using the blue and white coloring associated with the Tiger breed.
In terms of personality, Big Blue is the embodiment of stoic loyalty. He serves as the personal bodyguard and faithful companion to Pixie, one of the powerful lieutenants of the main villain, Moo. As a character, he is stalwart, dependable, and a creature of few words, rarely displaying strong emotion. However, this stoic exterior masks a deep well of feeling, particularly for Pixie, whom he protects without hesitation.
Initially, Big Blue and Pixie serve as antagonists in Moo's army, with Big Blue acting as her closest servant and enforcer. Their role in the story begins to shift during an encounter with the protagonist Genki and his group of Searchers. When Pixie is badly injured while saving Genki, it marks a turning point. Subsequently, Pixie formally defects from Moo, and Big Blue, in a display of his unwavering loyalty, follows her without question, becoming a tentative ally to the main cast. From that point forward, they assist the Searchers in their quest against Moo.
Big Blue's key relationship is, unequivocally, with Pixie. His entire existence revolves around serving and protecting her. This dynamic reaches its climax during a desperate battle against a fully powered Moo. After Moo mortally wounds Pixie, leaving her on the verge of becoming a Lost Disk, Big Blue makes the ultimate decision to save her. He chooses to fuse his own being with hers, a process that results in the cessation of his own existence. This heroic sacrifice allows Pixie to be reborn as a more powerful being named Granity, but at the cost of Big Blue himself. The tragedy of his sacrifice is highlighted when the newly formed Granity awakens and immediately asks where Big Blue is, unaware that he is gone.
Regarding notable abilities, Big Blue possesses the immense physical strength and durability typical of a Golem-type monster. His body composition, made of ice rock, grants him specific attributes related to ice and cold, making him resistant to heat and capable of maintaining freezing temperatures. His fighting style is that of a Mighty Glacier, relying on powerful, heavy-hitting physical attacks rather than speed. Throughout his appearances, he acts as a formidable protector, using his size and strength to shield Pixie and, later, the Searchers from harm. In a rare moment that hints at his internal world, the stoic Big Blue is seen shedding a tear when faced with the emotional farewell of his own sacrifice, a moment of vulnerability that surprises even himself.
