Description
Mu, also known as Master Moo or Muu, is the primary antagonist of the Monster Rancher anime. He is a dragon-type monster of immense power, originally engineered centuries ago as the ultimate weapon for use in a great war among the ancient people of Pangea. His dark powers quickly grew beyond control, leading him to turn against his creators and build a legion of corrupted monsters with the intent to destroy the world. To counter him, the people of Pangea created the Phoenix, a monster of equal strength. The two fought to a stalemate, leading to the development of a machine that separated Mu's spirit from his physical body, a process that also affected the Phoenix and scattered monsters' memories into mystery discs. Mu's soul was sealed within a disc locked away in his castle.

Ages later, Holly's father, searching for the Phoenix without the Magic Stone, inadvertently released Mu's soul, which possessed his body. Reborn, Mu gathered an army, including his elite enforcers known as the Big Bad Four, and terrorized the world while searching for his original body. With the aid of the Magic Stone, he located and excavated his body, but the fusion was incomplete. He used the Magic Stone to complete the restoration and then sought the Phoenix's soulless body to destroy it, resuming his plan for global annihilation. The Phoenix's soul had been dispersed among monsters like Mocchi, and in the final confrontation, Holly's father regained partial control, leading to both Mu and the Phoenix being destroyed. However, Mu's monster disc was later uncovered, and its attempt to be seized by his former general Durahan led to Mu overpowering and consuming his minions. The heroes eventually freed Durahan and sealed Mu permanently.

Mu is characterized as pure evil, a cruelly sadistic being who commits atrocities solely for the enjoyment of his dark soul. He has no redeeming qualities and is depicted as a personification of evil, drawing strength from hatred and malice. His motivations are entirely destructive, seeking the annihilation of all life without any desire for power or rule. He shows no loyalty to his minions, treating them as disposable tools. His notable abilities include the power to corrupt good monsters into his evil servants, control over dark energy, and immense physical strength. His soul can possess and influence others, and he can manifest in a monstrous dragon form with fur, scales, and goatlike horns. Mu's key relationships include his eternal rival the Phoenix, his unwitting host Holly's father, and his subordinates such as the general Durahan. Throughout the story, Mu's threat escalates as he gradually regains his full power, only to be ultimately defeated through the combined efforts of Genki, Holly, and their monster allies.
