Description
Kiyoko, designated No. 25, is a member of a group of psychic children known as the Espers in the anime Akira. She is the only girl among the three Espers who appear in the story, the others being Takashi and Masaru. Her physical appearance is that of a young child with a frail body, but her skin is prematurely aged, appearing heavily wrinkled and discolored. She has long, white hair styled into two braids tied with yellow ribbons and wears a simple pink nightgown. Because of her extreme physical weakness, she is almost always seen lying in bed and is dependent on medical support systems and the care of the other Espers, particularly Masaru who often carries her.
Kiyoko's background is rooted in a secret government project. As a young child in the original Tokyo, she was taken, likely as an orphan, to participate in a parapsychology experiment designed to develop psychic powers for political or military purposes. It was there that she befriended Takashi, Masaru, and a boy named Akira. They were among the few children who survived the brutal testing to gain significant abilities. The project came to a catastrophic end when Akira's uncontrolled powers created a psychic explosion that utterly destroyed Tokyo. After the founding of Neo-Tokyo, Kiyoko, Takashi, and Masaru were kept in prolonged isolation to hide the project's secrets. They were regularly given drugs to suppress their powers, which led to their premature aging and physical handicaps.
In terms of personality, Kiyoko is kind, gentle, and possesses a wisdom and perceptiveness that comes from her powers and her role as a spiritual guide. She often speaks in a cryptic manner because of the vague nature of her visions of the future. Despite her maturity, her mind is sheltered due to a life of isolation, and she retains a childlike innocence, becoming terrified at the sight of blood. Her primary motivation is to prevent another catastrophe like the one that destroyed Tokyo. She perceives the awakening psychic, Tetsuo Shima, as a dangerous threat and feels a deep responsibility to guide others to stop him, even attempting to have him assassinated. She cares for Takashi and Masaru like a mother and acts as the final decision-maker for the Espers.
Her role in the story is crucial as a catalyst for action. She has a prophetic dream about the destruction of Neo-Tokyo and Akira's return, a vision she relays to Colonel Shikishima, who trusts her implicitly and makes key decisions based on her prophecies. She and the other Espers attempt to stop Tetsuo by psychically attacking him, but they are forced to retreat. Later, she uses a resistance member named Kei as a psychic medium to battle Tetsuo and guide the protagonist, Kaneda. When Tetsuo comes to the Espers' nursery to find Akira, it is a fearful Kiyoko who ultimately reveals Akira's location. Her key relationships include her close, almost father-daughter bond with Colonel Shikishima, her protective and maternal connection with Takashi and Masaru, and her shared history with Akira, whose return she greets with joy.
Kiyoko develops throughout the film by overcoming her physical and psychological limitations. Though initially passive and sheltered, she and her fellow Espers eventually gather the courage to leave their isolated nursery to travel to the Olympic Stadium to confront Tetsuo directly. In the final moments, she uses her power to teleport the Colonel to safety, showing her continued concern for others even in the face of total destruction.
Kiyoko possesses a range of notable psychic abilities. Her primary power is precognition, which allows her to see future events, often in her sleep. She also has the ability to teleport herself, objects, and other people across great distances. She demonstrates powerful psychokinesis, which she uses to unlock doors, levitate herself, and even form a protective exoskeleton out of children's toys. Her abilities include telepathy, which she uses to communicate with the other Espers and the Colonel, and psychic possession, allowing her to channel her powers through a willing medium like Kei.
