TV-Series
Description
Guru, also known as the Grand Elder, is the oldest and wisest Namekian in existence during the events on Planet Namek. He is the sole survivor of a catastrophic climate shift that devastated the planet hundreds of years prior, and through the Namekian ability to reproduce asexually, he became the father of nearly all Namekians alive at the time of the Frieza Saga, having fathered 109 children. In his old age, Guru is morbidly obese and completely stationary, always depicted sitting on a large throne-like chair, unable to move from that spot.
Guru possesses a kind, gentle, and caring personality, showing great affection and concern for his children. He is deeply wise and well-respected by his people, who love him in return for his benevolent leadership and for saving their race from extinction. His primary motivation is the safety and well-being of the Namekian people. He is not driven by personal gain or combat, but by a profound paternal love for his descendants, a sentiment so strong that he later dies from a broken heart after sensing the deaths of many of his children at the hands of Frieza and his soldiers.
Within the story, Guru serves as a crucial, though stationary, ally to the protagonists during the conflict with Frieza. He resides in a remote Namekian village, protected by his powerful warrior son, Nail. When Krillin, Gohan, and the young Namekian Dende come to seek his aid, Guru agrees to help them based on his trust in Dende and his ability to sense the good in their hearts. His primary role is that of a wise guide and power enhancer. He possesses the unique ability to unlock the dormant potential of other beings by placing his hand on their heads. He performs this technique on Krillin and Gohan, vastly increasing their battle powers and giving them the strength needed to survive their encounters with Frieza and his elite forces. He also uses this ability on Dende, unlocking not a power boost but rather the child's latent healing abilities. Furthermore, Guru is the creator of the Namekian Dragon Balls, which summon the mighty dragon Porunga. Because of this, his life is directly tied to the Dragon Balls; should he die, they would become inert stone.
Guru's key relationships are primarily familial. He is the revered father and patriarch of all Namekians, most notably including his powerful son and bodyguard Nail, and his young son Dende, who would later become the guardian of Earth. He entrusts these sons with the future of their race. He is also a significant figure for the Earthlings Krillin and Gohan, whom he aids without hesitation. He also has a brief but important connection to Frieza, as the tyrant arrives on Namek specifically to steal the Dragon Balls Guru created.
Guru's personal development is defined by his cycle of death and succession. Initially, he dies during the battle with Frieza from a combination of old age and overwhelming stress and grief after most of his children are killed. His death temporarily incapacitates the Namekian Dragon Balls, complicating the heroes' plans. However, he is later revived by the Earth's Dragon Balls and transported to Earth as Planet Namek is destroyed. Knowing his death is now truly imminent from natural causes, he calmly and peacefully passes his title, power, and ownership of the Dragon Balls to his son, Moori, ensuring the Namekian legacy will continue on their new home planet, New Namek.
Notable abilities include the creation of the Namekian Dragon Balls, the power to unlock the hidden potential of others, and the use of telepathy to communicate over vast distances and sense the ki, or life energy, of his children across the planet. He can also read the memories of those he touches. Despite his great power and importance, Guru is never depicted in direct combat, his frailty and immobility defining his character in his final years.
