Description
Dabura is the former king of the Demon Realm, a powerful warrior who eventually fell under the control of the wizard Babidi and became his most formidable servant. His name is derived from the second half of the magical incantation "Abracadabra". He first appears during the Majin Buu arc, having traveled to Earth with Babidi to gather the energy necessary for the resurrection of the dreaded Majin Buu.
In appearance, Dabura is designed to resemble a traditional demon or the common depiction of Satan. He has reddish-pink skin, narrow yellow eyes, black hair, a small goatee, and large, pointed ears. He possesses a muscular, tall physique and sports two small horns on his forehead. While under Babidi's control, he bears the Master's 'M' symbol on his forehead. His attire consists of a light blue suit that leaves his chest exposed, a white spiked cape, a circular belt, and white boots.
Dabura possesses a complex personality that combines sadistic cruelty with a sophisticated and articulate manner. He speaks in a deep, booming voice and often compliments the talents of his opponents, but he does not hesitate to use brutal and underhanded tactics to dispose of his enemies. As the King of the Demon Realm, he is intelligent, observant, and a rare strategist among Dragon Ball villains. He was the one who noticed the deep-seated evil in Vegeta's heart and suggested that Babidi use his magic to take control of the Saiyan prince. Despite being under Babidi's spell, Dabura is not a mindless puppet; he remains loyal but is not afraid to question his master's orders when he believes them to be impractical, such as when he warned Babidi that Majin Buu was too dangerous to control.
His primary motivation is to serve his master Babidi and ensure the successful revival of Majin Buu. However, his deep-seated pride as the Demon King is also a driving force, as he confidently boasts that there is no one in the universe who can surpass his power. This motivation shifts upon Buu's awakening; after being brutally attacked by the creature he mocked, Dabura's goal becomes self-preservation and convincing Babidi that Buu must be re-sealed, ultimately leading to his defiance of his master.
As a key antagonist in the arc, Dabura plays a crucial role in escalating the conflict. He demonstrates his immense power immediately by effortlessly killing the Kai's attendant, Kibito, with a single energy blast and using his magical saliva to turn both Piccolo and Krillin into stone, forcing the Z-Fighters to venture into Babidi's spaceship. He personally guards one of the levels within the ship and engages in a fierce battle with Gohan. It is during this fight that he observes Vegeta's inner turmoil, setting the stage for Vegeta's fall to darkness and his subsequent fight with Goku, which provides the final energy needed to revive Majin Buu.
His most significant relationships are with Babidi and Majin Buu. To Babidi, Dabura is a loyal but sometimes doubtful right-hand man and the strongest of his henchmen. His relationship with Majin Buu is one of mutual disdain; Dabura initially sees the fat, child-like creature as a worthless fool, while Buu responds with extreme violence. After Dabura attempts to reason with Babidi, Buu transforms him into a cookie and devours him, leading to his death.
Dabura experiences an ironic development after his death. In the anime's filler episodes, when he arrives in the afterlife, King Yemma decides to send him to Heaven, reasoning that a demon like Dabura would find Hell to be quite pleasant and would enjoy the torment. In Heaven, his personality undergoes a complete transformation, becoming kind, gentle, and remorseful for his past sins, even being seen picking flowers and expressing a wish for love and friendship.
Dabura is a master of both physical combat and various magical arts. In terms of power, his strength is considered to be on par with that of the villain Perfect Cell from the previous saga, a sentiment shared by Goku after witnessing his abilities. However, he also relies heavily on his magic, which makes him more unpredictable than a standard Ki-based fighter. His most infamous ability is his Petrification Spit, where his saliva can instantly turn any living being it touches into solid stone, a curse that can only be broken upon Dabura's death. He can also breathe powerful streams of fire from his mouth and launch fireballs from his hands. Through his magic, Dabura can materialize solid weapons out of thin air, such as a sword to use in close combat or a spear for throwing. He is also capable of standard Ki techniques, including flight and firing powerful energy blasts like the Evil Impulse.
