Description
Milk, known in the original Japanese as Chi-Chi, is a prominent Earthling character in the Dragon Ball Z anime. She is introduced as the princess of Fire Mountain, the daughter of the Ox-King. As a child, Milk first meets Goku while he is on a journey; after a comedic misunderstanding in which Goku pats her crotch to determine her gender, she tells him that when they grow up he must take her hand in marriage. Goku agrees, believing marriage to be a kind of food. Several years later, Milk reappears as a masked competitor in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai martial arts tournament, seeking to hold Goku to his promise. Goku, having forgotten the promise, is surprised but honors it, and the two are married by the end of the original Dragon Ball series. In Dragon Ball Z, Milk’s role centers on her position as Goku’s wife and the overprotective mother of their two sons, Gohan and Goten. Her personality shifts from the innocent, shy girl of her youth to a fiery, strong-willed woman who frequently displays a short temper and a tendency toward violent outbursts when frustrated. She is fiercely dedicated to her family’s well-being, particularly her children’s education; she repeatedly attempts to steer Gohan away from fighting and toward academic studies, a goal that is constantly thwarted by the recurring threats Earth faces. With Goten, she takes a different approach and personally trains him in martial arts. Despite her domineering exterior, Milk is fundamentally well-meaning and genuinely cares for her husband and sons, even though their priorities often clash with her own. Her key relationships include her husband Goku, whose naive and battle-driven lifestyle she struggles to accept; her sons Gohan and Goten; her daughter-in-law Videl; and her father the Ox-King. She also has a notable initial conflict with Piccolo for taking Gohan away to train. Throughout the series, Milk experiences gradual development from a young girl infatuated with Goku into a mature if often exasperated mother and grandmother. Her notable abilities include a basic martial arts foundation learned indirectly through her father’s training under Master Roshi, enabling her to compete in the 23rd tournament. At her angriest, she can unleash a technique called Red Blazing Aura, which dramatically raises her ki and makes her difficult to harm. She also demonstrates considerable physical strength and a fierce determination that can intimidate even the strongest fighters. Milk remains a consistent presence in the Dragon Ball Z story, grounding the epic battles in a domestic reality and often providing the series’ strongest familial anchor.
