Description
In the universe of Dragon Ball Z, Shenron, whose name is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese words for "Divine Dragon" or "God Dragon", is the magnificent Eternal Dragon who emerges when all seven of the mystical Dragon Balls are gathered. His existence is the core purpose of the Dragon Balls themselves, as he is the entity summoned to grant the wishes of those who have proven themselves worthy of collecting the orbs. Shenron is depicted as a classic Eastern dragon, possessing a long, serpentine body coiled high in the sky, green scaly skin, sharp teeth, and red eyes. He is further adorned with brown antlers, long flowing whiskers, and a distinct mane of green hair on his cheeks, with crescent-shaped nostrils and four toes on each foot. Unlike the winged, fearsome dragons of Western mythology, Shenron has no wings and carries the benevolent and sacred symbolism of Oriental mythologies. A summoning is always accompanied by a dramatic shift in the environment; the sky turns pitch black, and a golden aura radiates from the dragon before he speaks.

Despite his divine and majestic appearance, Shenron possesses a complex personality that is not purely benevolent or malevolent. He is fundamentally a neutral figure, bound by a sacred duty to grant any wish within his power, regardless of the moral standing of the summoner or the nature of the desire. He has been summoned by pure evil beings such as King Piccolo and the Pilaf Gang, and he fulfills their requests just as dutifully as he does for heroes like Goku and his friends. While he is generally courteous and polite, speaking formally to those who call him, he has a notable aggressive temper and is easily impatient, particularly when dealing with frivolous, vague, or indecisive summoners. He once threatened to attack a summoner for wasting his time and was clearly displeased when a trivial wish, such as for a necklace or a pair of panties, was requested. On certain occasions, he demonstrates a literal interpretation of a wish, twisting the summoner's words to follow the letter of the request rather than the spirit, as seen when he granted unwanted youth to the Pilaf Gang by transforming them into young children.

Within the story of Dragon Ball Z, Shenron serves as the primary catalyst for resurrection and a recurring plot device to undo catastrophic events. His role is crucial in the Saiyan Saga, where he is summoned to revive Goku after his battle with Raditz, allowing him to fight the incoming Saiyan invasion. However, his connection to his creator, Kami, introduces a critical vulnerability. When Piccolo, who is Kami's other half, is killed by Nappa, Kami perishes as well, causing Shenron to be deactivated and the Dragon Balls to turn to stone. He is later indirectly revived through the Namekian Dragon Balls, and after the Frieza Saga, he is used to wish back everyone killed by Frieza and his men. When Kami permanently fuses with Piccolo during the Cell Saga, Shenron is once again deactivated, prompting the Z-Fighters to seek a new guardian for Earth. This leads to his most significant upgrade; when Dende becomes the new guardian, Shenron is remodeled to grant three wishes at a time instead of just one, though if a large number of people are revived with a single wish, the available wishes may be reduced to two.

Key relationships define Shenron's existence and limitations. His power is directly linked to the power of his creator; he cannot kill or directly defeat a being whose strength exceeds that of Kami or Dende. He also cannot reverse deaths caused by old age or natural sickness. His most notable relationship is one of abject terror towards Beerus, the God of Destruction. Despite being a powerful magical being himself, Shenron is absolutely terrified of Beerus, referring to him with respectful honorifics and acting like a humble servant, often scattering the Dragon Balls and retreating as quickly as possible to escape the god's presence. As a character, Shenron does not undergo internal development or emotional growth in a traditional sense, as he is more a force of nature or a tool than a conventional character. His evolution is primarily functional, such as the upgrade granted by Dende, or circumstantial, as seen when negative energy from overuse in Dragon Ball GT creates the Shadow Dragons, a later story exploring the consequences of relying on his power.

Shenron possesses a vast array of notable abilities, though they are strictly confined by specific rules. His primary ability is to grant any wish within his power, with the most common being the resurrection of the dead, restoration of destroyed planets, and the transfer of immense energy. He possesses vast awareness and knowledge of existence and history, demonstrated when he knew the ritual required to create the legendary Super Saiyan God, though his insight is not omniscient as he cannot locate objects outside his native universe. He has the power to restore youth, revive multiple people who have died within one year, and even make subtle alterations to memories. However, his reach is limited; he cannot affect beings more powerful than his creator, and he can only maintain his physical form for a limited time before he must disperse and turn the Dragon Balls back to stone for one year, unless wishes are saved for a later summoning.
