Description
Darbura, also known as Dabura, is a character from the Majin Buu saga of Dragon Ball Z. He is introduced as the reigning king of the Demon Realm, a position that establishes him as a powerful and malevolent figure from another dimension. His name is derived from the second half of the magical incantation "Abracadabra".

In terms of background, Darbura is originally the supreme ruler of the Demon Realm, known as the Demon Realm's most powerful warrior. However, by the time he appears on Earth, he has fallen under the control of the wizard Babidi. Babidi's sorcery has placed Darbura under a spell, making him a loyal, though not entirely unquestioning, servant and his most formidable minion in the mission to resurrect the monstrous Majin Buu.

Darbura's personality is a blend of contradictory traits that make him a memorable antagonist. On one hand, he is deeply sadistic, cruel, and enjoys disposing of his enemies with ruthless efficiency, often with a confident grin. On the other hand, he carries himself with a sophisticated and well-mannered air, speaking in an articulate and detailed fashion and even complimenting the abilities of his opponents. Unlike a mindless brute, Darbura is also highly intelligent and strategic. He is one of the few characters who dares to question Babidi's orders when he believes them to be illogical or dangerous, correctly predicting that Majin Buu would be uncontrollable. This keen intellect allows him to perceive the evil within Vegeta's heart, leading Babidi to exploit it and turn the Saiyan prince against his allies.

Darbura's primary motivation throughout his role in the story is to serve Babidi's goal of gathering enough energy to awaken Majin Buu. He acts as the deadly gatekeeper and field commander for Babidi's operation on Earth, using his immense power to eliminate threats and create the chaos necessary for energy absorption. His role in the narrative is to serve as a direct, overwhelming obstacle for the Earth's protectors. He demonstrates his power immediately by killing the Kaioshin's attendant, Kibito, with a single blast, and then using his unique petrification saliva to turn both Piccolo and Krillin into stone, a condition that can only be reversed upon his death. His subsequent battle with Gohan, who had grown weaker from years of neglecting his training, is a central conflict that showcases his fighting prowess and magical abilities. Ultimately, his role is to be a brutal enforcer whose actions raise the stakes and help clear the path for Buu's revival.

Key relationships define Darbura's actions. His relationship with Babidi is the most important; he is the wizard's right-hand man and most trusted enforcer, yet he is not a mere puppet. He serves out of magical compulsion but retains his reasoning, often acting as a pragmatic advisor to his more impulsive master. His relationship with the heroes is one of pure antagonism. He views them as sources of energy and targets to be eliminated, showing particular disdain for Gohan's perceived weakness. His most significant conflict is with Majin Buu, whom he initially dismisses as a foolish and useless being. This hubris proves fatal, as Buu, enraged by the insult, quickly overpowers and kills Darbura by transforming him into a cookie and eating him.

Darbura's character development is limited but notable, primarily occurring after his death. In the original manga, his story ends when he is killed by Buu. However, in the anime's filler content, an additional chapter is added. After arriving in the afterlife, the ogre king Enma decides that sending the demon king to Hell would be no punishment at all, as it would be too similar to his home in the Demon Realm. Instead, he sentences Darbura to Heaven, where the demon undergoes a complete and sincere reformation, expressing remorse for his evil deeds and wishing to experience the love and friendship he sees there.

As a fighter, Darbura possesses a host of notable abilities that make him a formidable opponent. His physical strength and power level are said by Goku to be roughly on par with that of the previous major villain, Perfect Cell. He complements this raw power with a variety of magical techniques. His most infamous ability is his Petrification Spit; a glob of his saliva can instantly turn any living being it touches into stone, with the effect only being broken when Darbura himself is killed. He can also conjure physical weapons like swords and spears out of thin air using magic, and can launch powerful blasts of fire from his mouth, such as the Flame Bullet attack. He is also adept at using afterimages to confuse opponents. Darbura's combination of strength, magic, and intelligence makes him one of the most strategically dangerous villains encountered in the series.
