Description
Mr. Satan, also known as Hercule in some English versions and as Master Pogi in the Philippines, is a character from the Dragon Ball Z anime and manga. His real name is Mark, and he was born in the year Age 736. As a young man, he trained at a martial arts dojo called Satan Castle. Through a combination of genuine skill and good fortune, he eventually won the World Martial Arts Tournament and adopted the ring name Mr. Satan after his dojo. He became the reigning world champion for many years after the stronger Z Fighters stopped participating in the tournaments.

Mr. Satan is a flamboyant and charismatic figure who thrives on public adoration. He is boastful, egotistical, and highly concerned with his reputation as the world's strongest man. Despite his bravado, he is aware of his own limitations when compared to the super-powered warriors he encounters. He can be cowardly in the face of overwhelming danger, but he also possesses a genuine sense of decency and a deep love for his family. His motivations are driven by a desire for fame, wealth, and recognition, yet he also genuinely wants to protect innocent people and be seen as a hero.

His role in the story is multifaceted. He first appears during the Cell Games, where he attempts to fight Cell but is easily brushed aside. After Cell is defeated by Gohan, Mr. Satan takes public credit for the victory, becoming a worldwide hero. This deception allows him to amass great wealth and influence. Later, during the Majin Buu saga, he encounters the primordial being Majin Buu and, instead of fighting, befriends him. Mr. Satan's kindness and humanity convince Buu to reject violence and embrace good, leading Buu to expel his evil side. Mr. Satan becomes Buu's caretaker and closest friend. In the final battle against Kid Buu, Mr. Satan uses his immense popularity to rally the people of Earth, convincing them to donate their energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb, a contribution that proves essential to saving the world.

Key relationships include his daughter, Videl, whom he raised as a single father after separating from his wife. He is fiercely protective of her. Through Videl's marriage to Son Gohan, Mr. Satan becomes part of the Son family and later the grandfather of Pan. His bond with Majin Buu is the most significant of his later life; he treats Buu as a person and friend, and the two live together along with Mr. Satan's dog, Bee. Mr. Satan also has a respectful but distant relationship with the Z Fighters, who allow him to take credit for their victories to preserve their privacy.

Mr. Satan undergoes notable development. Initially presented as a manipulative and cowardly fraud, he grows into a man who, despite his fears, is willing to stand up for others. His genuine affection for Buu and his willingness to risk his own safety during the final battle show a shift from selfishness to selflessness. By the end of Dragon Ball Z, he is recognized by Goku as a true hero in his own right, even if his methods are unconventional.

In terms of abilities, Mr. Satan is a highly skilled human martial artist, possessing above-average strength, speed, and technique for an ordinary human. He has won multiple World Martial Arts Tournaments legitimately. His signature moves include the Dynamite Kick, the Megaton Punch, and the Dynamic Mess Em Up Punch. However, he lacks any supernatural abilities such as ki control, flight, or energy blasts, making him vastly outclassed by the Z Fighters and the major villains of the series. His true strength lies in his charisma, influence, and ability to connect with others, which ultimately prove more valuable than physical power. As he ages and focuses more on his celebrity status, his physical condition declines, but his importance to the story remains.
