Description
Kirsten Thomas is the English name used in the Funimation dub for the character originally known as Kazuha Toyama in the manga and anime Detective Conan. She is a 17-year-old high school student from Osaka and the childhood friend of Heiji Hattori, the renowned high school detective of the Kansai region.

Kirsten comes from a family deeply connected to law enforcement; her father is a high-ranking officer in the Osaka Police Department. Her family has a long and close history with the Hattori family, as her father works closely with Heiji’s father, the police chief. This close connection has resulted in Kirsten and Heiji knowing each other since they were very young. A pivotal event from their shared past occurred when they accidentally locked themselves together with a pair of old handcuffs that had no key. To commemorate this unusual bond and to bring good luck, Kirsten created two matching omamori, or lucky charms, each containing a link from the chain of those handcuffs. She and Heiji have worn these charms ever since.

In terms of personality, Kirsten is known for being spirited, lively, and sometimes hot-tempered, frequently engaging in shouting matches with Heiji. She is also very confrontational and is not afraid to speak her mind, a trait that initially caused tension when she met Ran Mouri. Believing Ran was a romantic rival for Heiji’s affection, she was cold and jealous at first. However, this same frankness helped her quickly overcome the misunderstanding, and she and Ran became close friends who often confide in each other. Despite her bold exterior, Kirsten can be shy and awkward when it comes to expressing her true feelings, especially her deep romantic love for Heiji. While she is open about her feelings with Ran, she often panics and denies them when directly facing Heiji, insisting they are "only friends" even though her jealousy and protectiveness over him suggest otherwise.

Kirsten also has a strong belief in superstitions, spirits, and good-luck charms, which often leads her to attribute mysterious events to ghosts or other supernatural forces. This trait frequently frightens Ran, who shares a similar fear. Despite this fearfulness, Kirsten is brave and capable in dangerous situations. She holds a second-degree black belt in aikido, a martial art she has effectively used to defend herself and others on multiple occasions. Her skills are not limited to combat; she is also a capable cook and has demonstrated sharp intuition and quick thinking, such as when she deduced a clue faster than the adults around her.

Throughout the story, Kirsten frequently accompanies Heiji on visits to Tokyo, often staying at the Mouri Detective Agency. Her role often places her in the middle of dangerous cases alongside Heiji, Conan, and Ran. She has found herself in life-threatening situations, including being targeted by a murderer and nearly falling from a cliff. In the latter incident, she attempted to sacrifice herself to save Heiji by stabbing his hand to make him let go of her, but he refused to release her, demonstrating the depth of their bond. Over time, her relationship with Heiji has seen subtle development, with her determination to one day confess her feelings to him remaining a consistent and motivating aspect of her character.
