TV-Series
Description
Kanenori Wakita is a sushi chef working at the Beika Iroha Sushi restaurant, which is conveniently located right next door to the Mouri Detective Agency. Behind this unassuming public identity, he is actually Rum, the powerful second-in-command of the Black Organization and the close aide of the syndicate's enigmatic boss, Renya Karasuma. His real name is unknown, and his persona as Wakita is a deep cover designed to facilitate his mission. The character has a significant and complex background tied to the organization. He inherited his code name, Rum, from his father, who served the organization's boss for many years. He was a key figure in a major case that took place seventeen years ago in the United States, which involved the deaths of the wealthy financier Amanda Hughes and the renowned shogi player Kohji Haneda. More recently, he assumed the identity of a wandering sushi chef to get close to the private detective Kogoro Mouri, after the restaurant's regular worker was in an accident. His goal in doing so is to observe Kogoro and extract information, as he has a specific interest in the brilliant high school detective Shinichi Kudo, having previously instructed the operative Bourbon to gather intelligence on him. He also views Shinichi's father, the famous novelist Yusaku Kudo, as a threat to the organization and has ordered Vermouth to investigate him.

The personality of Kanenori Wakita is multi-faceted, presenting a stark contrast between his public role and his true nature. As the sushi chef, he embodies the stereotype of an "edokko," or a true child of Tokyo. This persona is characterized as being forward, confrontational, outspoken, and having a strong fondness for justice and, fittingly, sushi. He hates betrayal and compares those who commit it to dishonest fish-sellers. He is a fan of Kogoro Mouri's detective work and even asks to become his apprentice. In this guise, he is friendly and personable. However, his true personality as Rum is quite different. He is described by his subordinate Bourbon as being exceedingly impatient. He is also a rude and highly intuitive individual who will take an immediate interest in, and begin investigating, anyone he deems suspicious or a potential threat to the organization or to himself. In stark contrast to his Wakita personality, Rum's manner of speaking is noted to be more polite and formal.

Wakita's role in the story is that of a primary antagonist, one of the highest-ranking and most dangerous members of the Black Organization. His deception places him at the very doorstep of the series' main protagonists, working in a restaurant adjacent to the Mouri Detective Agency, where Conan Edogawa lives. This position allows him to observe Conan and Kogoro directly. He frequently interacts with them, using his cover to join in on investigations and even engaging in deduction contests. On one occasion, he challenged Kogoro to solve a pickpocketing case at the sushi bar, demonstrating his own sharp analytical mind. He also uses his position to make food deliveries, which provides him with excuses to be in the neighborhood for surveillance, such as when he appeared near Shinichi Kudo's house amidst a media frenzy. From the shadows, he issues critical orders to other Black Organization members like Gin, Bourbon, and Vermouth, directing their operations and investigations. For instance, he demonstrated his strategic cunning by detecting a fake message code planted by the FBI, allowing his subordinates to set a counter-trap that resulted in several FBI agents being killed.

His key relationships are defined by his high status within the Black Organization. He answers only to the boss, Renya Karasuma, who trusts him implicitly, enough to place him as the organization's highest-ranking executive. He commands the loyalty of top agents like Gin, who knows Wakita's true identity and follows his commands without question, though he may show occasional annoyance. He also works closely with Vermouth, trusting her judgment for certain tasks, and has tasked Bourbon with gathering information. In one of the feature films, he is shown to have agents who report directly to him, such as Curaçao, whom he saved from execution and appointed as his right-hand agent. Among his enemies, he has a direct and violent history with Rumi Wakasa, who seeks revenge against him. He is also, of course, a primary target for Conan Edogawa and the FBI, with the young detective eventually deducing his true identity as Rum.

As for character development, the most significant change has been for the audience, with the revelation that the seemingly benign sushi chef is in fact the feared Rum. Within the story, his development is ongoing as he inches closer to discovering the secrets of Conan and Shinichi Kudo. He has shown a growing interest in Conan's intelligence, and his investigations are becoming more pointed as he works to uncover the truth behind the "Sleeping Kogoro" phenomenon and the reappearance of Shinichi Kudo.

Kanenori Wakita possesses a range of notable abilities that make him a formidable adversary. He has a keen sense of observation and relatively good deduction skills, having loved mysteries since childhood. He was able to solve a complex code alongside Conan and correctly deduced a complicated betting ticket situation. He is considered more intelligent than the top agent Gin. He is also a master of disguise, similar to Vermouth, a skill that is essential for his deep-cover persona as Wakita. He has skills in culinary arts, though he claims he cannot safely wield a knife due to his injured left eye, a convenient excuse that keeps him from being confined to the kitchen and allows him to interact with customers. He is shown to be able to speak English, indicating a good education, and he has the ability to brainwash agents into becoming his loyal operatives. Historically, his left eye possessed an ability similar to a photographic memory, which he used to memorize the gestures and habits of influential people in order to blackmail them and help the organization grow. He has since damaged that eye and replaced it with a prosthetic, which he now conceals under a medical eye patch in his Wakita disguise. There are conflicting accounts of his true appearance among organization members, but these descriptions, which vary between a strong man, a feminine man, or an old man, are fabricated by Rum himself to keep his identity a secret. Under his wig, false teeth, and gauze, his true face is that of a bald, older man with a strong build.
