TV-Series
Description
Wataru Takagi is a police sergeant and detective serving in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department`s Criminal Investigation First Division, working directly under Inspector Megure. He is a young officer, approximately 26 years old, and is depicted as a dedicated member of the force who shows increasing promise as the series progresses. The character originated without a name, but during an anime recording session, the actor ad-libbed a response, giving the previously unnamed detective the surname Takagi, which was subsequently adopted into the canon.

In terms of personality, Takagi is initially portrayed as somewhat self-conscious and bumbling, but he consistently demonstrates a strong sense of justice, a noble character, and a deep desire to protect others. He is notably polite and respectful, even in alarming situations, and often defers to the judgment of his senior colleague and partner, Miwako Sato, out of genuine respect for her abilities. A key aspect of his character is a self-sacrificing trait, which drives him to place himself in harm`s way to ensure the safety of civilians and his fellow officers. He has faced numerous life-threatening situations, including being handcuffed in a burning warehouse and trapped with time bombs, which have led to brief bouts of post-traumatic stress, yet he continues to relentlessly pursue justice.

Takagis motivations are heavily influenced by his professional responsibilities and his personal relationships. His mentor, a senior officer named Date, died and left him a notebook that serves as a source of personal motivation to live up to Dates example. His most prominent driving force is his deep affection for Miwako Sato. Their relationship is a central part of his character arc. While Sato is his superior and is admired by many of her male colleagues, including initially Inspector Shiratori, Takagi slowly wins her heart through his honesty, sincerity, and dedication. Sato finds in him traits reminiscent of her late colleague Jinpei Matsuda, and their relationship evolves from professional to romantic, eventually sharing their first kiss after Takagi is severely wounded while protecting others.

Within the story, Takagi serves as a recurring police ally. He is one of the officers who most trusts the judgment of Conan Edogawa, frequently listening to his subtle hints and allowing the boy to lead investigations to find crucial evidence. Notably, Takagi has come closer than any other member of the First Division to uncovering Conan`s true identity, having directly and bluntly asked him, Who are you, really? during a tense case. This highlights his sharp intuition, even if he does not ultimately solve the mystery.

His development throughout the series is marked by a growing confidence in his role as a detective. He evolves from a nervous newcomer into a more capable and reliable officer. His relationship with Sato also matures, overcoming comical outside interference from the rest of the police force and his own insecurities to reach a stable romantic partnership. A running joke within the series involves their relationship progress being constantly interrupted by colleagues or unfortunate circumstances.

Aside from his investigative work, Takagi has a few notable abilities and hobbies. He has a strong intuition and a keen sense for justice. His personal hobbies include playing the maracas and following international professional wrestling, being a fan of wrestlers such as Bruiser Brody and Keiji Mutoh, to the extent that he can recognize wrestling moves.
