Description
Kiyonaga Matsumoto is a supporting character in the Detective Conan series. He is a high-ranking officer in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, serving as the chief of the police and the direct superior to Inspector Juzo Megure. At the start of the series, Matsumoto holds the rank of Superintendent, but he is later promoted to the position of section chief with the rank of Senior Superintendent, a role which was then succeeded by Hyoue Kuroda.

Physically, Matsumoto is a tall and imposing figure, which contributes to his stern and intimidating first impression. One of his most notable features is a prominent scar running over his left eye. This scar is not simply an aesthetic detail but a mark from his past; he received the wound fifteen years prior while chasing a serial killer, who slashed him with a katana. This case remained unsolved for years until Conan Edogawa helped bring the killer to justice.

Despite his harsh and brute appearance, Matsumoto possesses a personality that is more complex than it initially seems. While he is completely serious and professional while on duty, he is also capable of being a kind and gentle person. His stern demeanor often softens when it comes to his family, and he is known to become very angry only when a loved one is placed in danger.

Matsumoto’s motivations and personal history are deeply explored through his relationships, particularly with his daughter. His only child is a daughter named Sayuri Matsumoto, who was once the music teacher of Shinichi Kudo, Ran Mouri, and Sonoko Suzuki at Teitan Middle School. The character makes his first appearance in the series during Sayuri’s wedding, an event that becomes the center of a tragic case. During the ceremony, Sayuri is poisoned, and the investigation reveals that the groom, Toshihiko Takasugi, was the would-be murderer. His motive was to avenge his mother’s death, which he blamed on Matsumoto’s negligence during the same chase that gave the chief his facial scar. In an unexpected turn of events, after the case is resolved, Matsumoto ends up with Takasugi as his son-in-law, choosing to forgive him and move forward. Matsumoto was also married, but his wife passed away at some unspecified point in the past.

Within the larger storyline of the Tokyo police, Matsumoto serves as a senior authority figure. He is often the one to give Inspector Megure specific instructions on particularly dangerous cases or to approve his plans. His role also extends into the series' films; notably, in the movie The Raven Chaser, he is kidnapped and impersonated by Irish, a member of the Black Organization. He demonstrates his resourcefulness in this situation by leaving a hidden clue to his location.

Regarding abilities, Matsumoto is not merely an administrator. He is skilled in both deduction and combat. This is evidenced by his ability to, despite being wounded and slashed across the eye by a serial killer, successfully disarm his attacker and use the weapon to strike back, thereby subduing the criminal. This blend of physical prowess and authoritative leadership defines his role as a formidable chief of the Tokyo police.
