Description
Kogoro Mouri is a private detective and a central character, serving as the father of Ran Mouri. A former officer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, he now operates the Mouri Detective Agency from his home in Beika Town. In his late thirties, he is a tall, reasonably fit man with slicked-back black hair, a short mustache, and high cheekbones.

Kogoro’s past is marked by two significant, intertwined events: his departure from the police force and his separation from his wife, Eri Kisaki. He and Eri, both alumni of Teitan High School, eventually married and had a daughter, Ran. While the full details remain unconfirmed in the manga, it is suggested that Kogoro left the police force following an incident where he was forced to shoot Eri in the leg to save her during a hostage situation. Shortly after this, Eri moved out of their home, and although they have never officially divorced, they have lived apart for over a decade. Their daughter, Ran, frequently attempts to reconcile them, an effort complicated by Kogoro’s flirtatious nature and his difficulty in openly expressing his lingering feelings for his wife.

On the surface, Kogoro presents the image of an incompetent and often foolish detective. He is frequently lazy, preferring to laze around his office unless the client is an attractive woman. He is boastful, with an inflated sense of his own abilities, and is quick to jump to the wrong conclusions based on the most obvious clues. This behavior often embarrasses the police, particularly his former colleague Inspector Megure, who is sometimes exasperated by Kogoro’s antics. His personality also includes a strong infatuation with beautiful women, especially pop idol Yoko Okino, whose merchandise clutters his office. He is a heavy smoker and a frequent drinker, with beer cans often littering his workspace.

This unflattering public persona is deliberately contrasted with his true capabilities, which emerge when people he cares about are in danger. In cases involving his family or friends, Kogoro transforms into a serious, focused, and shrewd investigator. In these moments, he demonstrates sharp logical reasoning and a deep understanding of interpersonal relationships, sometimes even solving a case before Conan can. This duality forms the core of his character: a lazy, egotistical man who nonetheless possesses a strong moral compass, a profound sense of justice, and deep, unspoken affection for his family.

His role in the story is primarily defined by his unwitting partnership with the protagonist, Conan Edogawa. The young detective, who is actually the high school prodigy Shinichi Kudo, moves into the Mouri residence to use the bumbling detective as a front for his investigation into the Black Organization. Whenever a tricky case arises, Conan uses a tranquilizer dart to knock Kogoro unconscious, then uses a voice-changing bowtie to impersonate him and reveal the true culprit. As a result, Kogoro gains national fame as the Sleeping Kogoro, a brilliant detective who solves complex mysteries while appearing to be asleep. Despite having solved hundreds of cases in this manner, he never questions his blackouts and happily accepts the credit, further cementing his public reputation.

Beyond his detective work, Kogoro possesses notable physical abilities. He is an expert in judo, having been the ace of his university’s judo team, and is particularly skilled at the ippon seoi-nage, or one-arm shoulder throw. He is also an excellent marksman, a skill honed during his time in the police force. Despite his average appearance and often slovenly demeanor, these abilities occasionally surface, allowing him to physically apprehend suspects with ease.
