Description
Conan Edogawa is the alias used by the teenage detective Shinichi Kudo after his body was physically shrunken to the size of a young child. This transformation occurs when he is forced to swallow an experimental poison known as APTX 4869 by two men who are later revealed to be members of a sinister and secretive criminal syndicate, commonly referred to as the Black Organization. The poison causes a rare side effect, shrinking Shinichi's entire body while leaving all of his mental faculties intact, including his memories, personality, and extraordinary deductive abilities. To conceal his true identity from the dangerous organization, which would kill him and anyone close to him if he were discovered, Shinichi adopts the name Conan Edogawa. The name is a portmanteau of the mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. He comes to live at the residence of his childhood friend, Ran Mouri, and her father, the private detective Kogoro Mouri, under the guise of being a distant relative taken in by the inventor Professor Hiroshi Agasa.

As Conan, his primary motivation is to hunt down and dismantle the Black Organization, obtain an antidote to the poison that will allow him to return to his original body, and protect those he cares about from becoming targets of the syndicate. To further his investigation, he enrolls as a first-grader at Teitan Elementary School. There, he is befriended by his classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, who form a group called the Detective Boys. While he often finds their antics troublesome, Conan frequently leads the group in solving smaller cases. Living at the Mouri Detective Agency provides a steady stream of cases, which Conan uses to his advantage. Because Kogoro Mouri is a notoriously incompetent detective, Conan secretly solves the cases himself. Using a watch-shaped tranquilizer provided by Professor Agasa, he incapacitates Kogoro and then uses a voice-changing bow tie to mimic his voice and deliver the deduction, creating the legendary persona known as "Sleeping Kogoro". His goal is to make Kogoro famous, hoping that a high-profile case related to the Black Organization will eventually cross the agency's desk.

In his daily life, Conan makes a conscious effort to behave like a child, using affectionate terms like "Ran-neechan" and "Oji-san" for Ran and Kogoro, and speaking in a simple, childish tone. However, when engaged in solving a crime, his passion for detective work often gets the better of him. He frequently slips into complex, adult-level reasoning or displays an encyclopedic knowledge of subjects far beyond a first-grader's scope. In these situations, he quickly makes an excuse, claiming he learned the information from television, from Professor Agasa, or from "Shinichi-niichan," treating his original identity as a separate person. Despite his sharp intellect, Conan struggles to connect with other children on their level. He is unfamiliar with popular children's television shows and, to his chagrin, is often terrible at their video games. His profound skill and passion for soccer, a holdover from his life as Shinichi, also tend to manifest at inappropriate times.

Conan's core relationships are defined by his dual existence. He lives under the same roof as Ran Mouri, for whom he harbors deep affection, but he must perpetually hide his true identity from her to keep her safe. Ran is fiercely protective of Conan, treating him like a little brother, but she frequently suspects that he and Shinichi are the same person, forcing Conan to rely on the help of Agasa and his parents, Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, to maintain his cover. His relationship with Kogoro Mouri is complex. On the surface, Kogoro treats Conan as a nuisance and a freeloader, often tossing him aside at crime scenes. Yet, over time, a grudging paternal bond has formed, with Kogoro showing genuine concern when Conan is in danger. The most significant relationship in Conan's fight against the Black Organization is with Ai Haibara. Haibara is the former organization scientist, codenamed Sherry, who created the APTX 4869 and who also took the poison to escape, leading to her own body shrinking. As the only two people who fully understand their situation, they share a relationship of mutual trust, reliance, and shared destiny. Conan serves as her protector, while she provides invaluable information about the organization and works on developing a temporary antidote for him.

Throughout the series, Conan's role evolves from a solitary agent to a key strategist within a wider network of allies against the Black Organization. He works closely with the FBI, particularly agents Shuichi Akai, Jodie Starling, and James Black, who have come to recognize him as a formidable operative and refer to him by nicknames like "Cool Kid" and "Silver Bullet". He also forms a close partnership with Heiji Hattori, a rival teenage detective from Osaka who deduces Conan's true identity and becomes one of his most trusted confidants and allies. Over time, Conan becomes more calculating and cautious in his dealings with the Black Organization, having learned from early brushes with death that his impulsive actions can endanger not only himself but also those who help him.

Despite his childlike appearance, Conan possesses a staggering array of abilities. His deductive skills are preeminent; he has a near-photographic memory, an almost fanatical attention to detail, and the ability to synthesize seemingly unrelated clues into a coherent logical conclusion. His knowledge spans countless fields, including chemistry, history, literature, physics, and even foreign languages. While famously tone-deaf as a singer, he has perfect pitch and can play the violin. He is also proficient in practical skills such as first aid, reading lips, and bomb disposal. To compensate for his child-sized body, Professor Agasa invented a series of gadgets that Conan uses with great proficiency. The most notable are the power-enhancing kick shoes, which, when activated, allow him to kick any nearby object, such as a soccer ball or a fire extinguisher, with the force of a powerful projectile. He combines this with his expert athleticism and soccer skills, enabling him to subdue criminals from a distance with incredible precision. Other tools include a solar-powered voice-changing bow tie and a tranquilizer watch. While his physical strength is that of a child, his agility and coordination remain those of a trained athlete, making him surprisingly adept at activities like skiing, ice skating, and using his turbo-charged skateboard at high speeds.
