Description
Conan Edogawa is the alias used by Shinichi Kudo, a highly capable teenage detective whose body was mysteriously regressed to that of a six- or seven-year-old child. His birthday is May 4th. Shinichi's transformation occurred after he was caught spying on a suspicious transaction at a tropical amusement park by two agents of a clandestine criminal syndicate often referred to as the Black Organization. To eliminate him, the agents forced him to swallow an experimental poison known as APTX 4869. Instead of killing him, a rare side effect of the drug caused his entire body to shrink back to the appearance of his childhood self, though his nervous system, memories, and intellect remained fully intact.

Fearing that the Black Organization would murder him and anyone associated with him if they discovered he was still alive, Shinichi followed the advice of his neighbor, the inventor Professor Hiroshi Agasa, and concealed his true identity. He adopted the name Conan Edogawa, a portmanteau of the mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Ranpo. To provide a cover and potentially gain access to cases linked to the organization, Conan was placed in the care of his childhood friend, Ran Mouri, and her father, Kogoro Mouri, who runs a private detective agency.

As Conan, his primary motivations are to hunt down and dismantle the Black Organization, find a permanent antidote to the poison to restore his original body, and protect his loved ones from the danger his secret identity poses. He enrolls at Teitan Elementary School, where he reluctantly befriends classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, who together form a junior detective group known as the Detective Boys.

While living with the Mouri family, Conan strives to maintain a childlike facade, referring to Ran as Ran-neechan and using childish expressions. However, his inherent nature as a brilliant detective frequently surfaces. He possesses an extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of various subjects, from forensic science and literature to chemistry and soccer. When investigating crimes, he often becomes so engrossed that he voices complex deductions far beyond the understanding of a typical first-grader, forcing him to awkwardly attribute his knowledge to things he heard on television or was taught by Professor Agasa.

To assist with his investigations and compensate for his diminished physical size and strength, Conan uses an array of ingenious gadgets created by Professor Agasa. The most iconic of these are the voice-changing bowtie, which allows him to mimic any voice, and the power-enhancing kick shoes, which amplify his kicking force to incredible levels, allowing him to subdue criminals with common objects like soccer balls or fire hydrants. He also uses a tranquilizer dart watch to incapacitate Kogoro Mouri, which allows him to use the bowtie to impersonate Kogoro's voice and solve cases in his stead, creating the famous persona of Sleeping Kogoro. Other gadgets include tracking glasses, a solar-powered skateboard for high-speed mobility, and a belt that dispenses an inflatable soccer ball.

Central to his quest is the complex relationship he maintains with Ran Mouri. Conan cares deeply for her and lives under the same roof, yet he must constantly hide his true feelings and identity. This leads to many awkward and poignant situations, as Ran frequently suspects that Conan might actually be Shinichi. He often uses temporary antidotes, invented by a later ally, to briefly revert to his true form for critical moments, most notably to confess his feelings to Ran in London.

Over the course of the story, Conan forms several key alliances. Heiji Hattori, a high school detective from Osaka, deduces Conan's secret and becomes one of his closest friends and rivals. The most significant ally is Ai Haibara, the former Black Organization scientist who developed APTX 4869. After she also takes the poison and regresses to a child's form, she escapes the organization and is taken in by Professor Agasa. Together, Conan and Haibara work to develop an antidote while she provides invaluable insight into the organization's inner workings. He also cooperates with the FBI, including agents Shuichi Akai and Jodie Starling, who are investigating the same syndicate.

In terms of notable abilities, Shinichi Kudo is often called the Heisei Holmes or the savior of the Japanese police, and this genius-level intellect is Conan's greatest weapon. He also has absolute pitch, a rare auditory ability that allows him to identify specific sounds, such as individual notes in a chord or the unique tone of a phone's keypad. Ironically, this exists alongside his famous weakness: he is completely tone-deaf and cannot sing accurately. He is also highly athletic, with exceptional skills in soccer honed to the point of being scouted for a professional career, and possesses a functional command of foreign languages such as English.
