Description
Geumgang, known in the original Japanese version as Kikyo, is a pivotal character whose tragic history serves as a catalyst for the main events of the narrative. Her story is defined by love, betrayal, death, and an uneasy resurrection that forces her to navigate a world where she no truly belongs.

In her lifetime, Geumgang was the powerful shrine maiden entrusted with the protection and purification of the Shikon Jewel, a legendary orb of immense power. She was responsible for defending the jewel from the countless demons it attracted, a duty she carried out with unwavering resolve. It was during this period that she encountered the half-demon Inuyasha. Instead of destroying him, she recognized a kindred spirit in his isolation, as she herself felt separated from ordinary human life by her spiritual duties. Their enmity slowly transformed into a deep, forbidden love. Geumgang proposed using the Shikon Jewel to turn Inuyasha into a human, which would also cause the jewel to vanish, allowing her to live as an ordinary woman by his side. This dream was shattered by the demon Naraku, who orchestrated a cruel deception, tricking each into believing the other had betrayed them. Mortally wounded, a heartbroken Geumgang used the last of her strength to seal Inuyasha to a sacred tree with a sealing arrow, then instructed her younger sister, Kaede, to cremate her body along with the Shikon Jewel. She died believing her love had been a lie, her soul filled with bitterness and sorrow.

Fifty years later, a witch named Urasue exhumed Geumgang's ashes and grave soil, creating a new body in an attempt to revive her as a tool. When the ritual failed to call her soul back, the magic drew the soul of her reincarnation, a modern-day schoolgirl named Kagome Higurashi. The soul was forcibly split, with a small, residual portion—dominated by the hatred and pain Geumgang felt at the moment of her death—animating the clay body. Revived as an unnatural being, Geumgang initially sought to drag Inuyasha to hell with her. However, she soon learned the truth of Naraku's deception, shifting her focus away from revenge on Inuyasha and toward a new objective: destroying the source of all her suffering.

Personality-wise, Geumgang is a complex study in contradictions. In life, she was known for her calm, noble, and compassionate demeanor, yet she was also ruthlessly efficient against demons, a necessary hardness forged by her duty. Upon her resurrection, this persona is intensified into something colder and more detached. Her existence is a painful one, maintained only by the soul collectors, serpentine creatures that gather the souls of deceased maidens to sustain her clay vessel. This precarious state, combined with her previous trauma, often makes her seem aloof and driven, willing to walk a darker, more solitary path than Inuyasha and his companions. Despite this, her innate kindness never fully disappears. She continues to heal the sick and protect children, demonstrating a deep-seated compassion that transcends her own suffering.

Geumgang's primary motivation becomes the complete annihilation of Naraku, the architect of her ruin. She is willing to employ morally ambiguous methods to achieve this goal, sometimes even acting in opposition to Inuyasha's group if she believes it will bring her closer to their common enemy. Her journey is about reclaiming her agency after being a victim of fate. She ultimately chooses a final, self-sacrificing path, using her spiritual powers to purify Naraku and the cursed jewel from within, a mission that allows her to find peace and a sense of purpose beyond her personal tragedy.

Her key relationships are central to her character. The bond with Inuyasha is the most significant. Their love, rekindled after the truth is revealed, is bittersweet, haunted by what was lost. Geumgang understands that Inuyasha has found a new reason to live and a sense of belonging with Kagome, and she accepts this, encouraging him to move on even as they share moments of profound connection. Her relationship with Kagome, her reincarnation, is one of strange kinship and initial jealousy. Over time, this evolves into a mutual, if wary, respect. They are two halves of the same soul, and Geumgang often entrusts Kagome with the future she cannot have. Her relationship with her younger sister, Kaede, is marked by nostalgia and sorrow, as Kaede is now an elderly woman, having lived a full life that Geumgang was denied.

Over the course of the narrative, Geumgang undergoes significant development. She moves from a vengeful spirit consumed by the past to a tragic heroine who accepts her death and fights for something greater than herself. Her initial bitterness softens into a quiet, melancholic strength. She embraces her role not as a mourner of her lost life, but as a protector who uses her unique existence to combat evil. Her greatest act of development is her choice to save the demon slayer Kohaku, even if it hampers her own plans against Naraku, demonstrating that her compassion ultimately outweighs her desire for revenge.

Geumgang is an exceptionally powerful and spiritually gifted individual. Even before her death, she was one of the most formidable shrine maidens of her era. Her primary weapons are a bow and arrows, which she infuses with her potent spiritual power. Her signature technique is the sacred arrow of purification, which can obliterate demons, shatter barriers, and dispel miasma. She also possesses a special sealing arrow capable of immobilizing beings like Inuyasha without killing them. Her spiritual power grants her a wide array of abilities, including the creation of invisible, impenetrable barriers, the use of ofuda (talismans) for various effects, and the power to heal wounds and purify corruption with a touch. Her skills in archery are unmatched, displaying incredible accuracy and the ability to adjust the power of her shots from non-lethal restraint to complete annihilation. She is also highly intelligent and perceptive, often able to deduce an enemy's plan with minimal information. Her unearthly existence grants her the use of the soul collectors for sustenance and transport, but it is her sheer spiritual will that remains her most potent asset.
