Description
Bishop Hartford is a character from the 1990 Japanese anime series Robin Hood no Daibōken, which adapts the classic Robin Hood legend. In this version of the story, he serves as a prominent antagonist, specifically identified as the greedy bishop of Nottingham.
His primary motivation throughout the series is his avarice, specifically his desire to acquire the wealth of the noble Lancaster family. To this end, he schemes to adopt the young heiress Marian Lancaster, which would grant him control over her family's fortune. This objective puts him in direct opposition to the protagonist, Robin Hood, who is dedicated to protecting Marian.
Bishop Hartford is often allied with the other primary antagonist, Baron Alwyn, who is based on the traditional Sheriff of Nottingham character. Together, they represent the corrupt authority figures exploiting the people of Nottingham.
Despite his initial role as a villain, the character is not entirely static. In a significant development towards the conclusion of the series, Bishop Hartford begins to change for the better. Unlike Baron Alwyn, who ultimately relapses into his villainous ways, the Bishop’s redemption proves to be genuine and lasting. He ultimately defects from his alliance with the Baron and becomes loyal to the protagonists, providing Robin and his allies with crucial information that helps them thwart Baron Alwyn’s final plot to take over the kingdom. This shift transforms him from a greedy adversary into a supporting figure who aids in the story's resolution.
