Description
Baron Alwyn, also known as Baron Alwine, is the primary antagonist of the 1990 anime series. He holds the position of Baron of Nottingham and serves as the main oppressor of the region's populace, embodying the greed and cruelty typical of a feudal lord in conflict with the legendary outlaw.

His background is rooted in his ambition and ruthlessness, which are first demonstrated through a devastating act against the noble Huntington family. He is directly responsible for ordering the destruction of the Huntington castle, an attack that left young Robin Hood and his cousins as the sole survivors and forced them to flee for their lives into Sherwood Forest. His tyranny is not limited to a single noble family, as his oppressive taxation and forced labour policies had previously driven other villagers, including the young bandit Little John, to escape their homes and seek refuge in the woods.

Personality-wise, Baron Alwyn is defined by a singular focus on power, wealth, and the complete eradication of those who defy him. He is described as a cruel, greedy, and inconsiderate man who shows no remorse for the suffering he inflicts upon his workers and the common people. His motivations are consistently driven by a desire for personal gain, whether through taxing the poor, eliminating political rivals like the Huntingtons, or pursuing the hidden wealth associated with Marian Lancaster. He forms an alliance with the shady Bishop Herfort to get his hands on the Lancaster family fortune, showing a willingness to conspire with other corrupt figures of authority.

In the story, Baron Alwyn serves as the central force of opposition against Robin Hood and his band of outlaws. His role is to act as the oppressor from whom the heroes must protect the innocent. He commands a variety of forces to destroy the outlaws, including his own troops led by a dangerous knight named Gilbert. On one occasion, after discovering Marian had joined the outlaws, he even orders the ruthless mercenary Guy of Guisborne to lead a group of soldiers to capture her and destroy the band. His evil intentions remain persistent throughout the series, as he constantly devises new plots, such as commissioning the Knights of the Black Rose to hunt down Robin and his friends or setting up customs posts to levy heavy tolls on the local people, which the outlaws then work to sabotage.

Key relationships are central to his role as the villain. His primary relationship is as the arch-enemy of Robin Hood, the boy whose life he destroyed and who now constantly thwarts his plans. He also has a significant connection to Little John, whom he originally forced into a life of banditry. His relationship with authority is one of ambition, as he plots to increase his own power, ultimately leading him to a scheme that would allow him to take over the kingdom.

The character exhibits a notable development over the course of the series. While he remains a relentless adversary for most of the story, his many defeats at Robin's hands eventually have a psychological impact. A near-death experience leads him to start making a positive change in his behaviour. However, this reformation is short-lived, as the temptation of a new plot to seize the kingdom proves too strong, and he reverts to his greedy, power-hungry self, forcing Robin and King Richard himself to intervene. As a baron, his notable abilities are not physical combat skills but rather his authority, wealth, and strategic cunning. He exercises his power by commanding a formidable military force, levying oppressive taxes, and orchestrating complex schemes to eliminate his enemies and expand his territory.
