Description
Baron Alwine, also sometimes referred to as Alwyn, is the primary antagonist in the 1990 anime series Robin Hood. He holds the position of Baron of Nottingham and serves as the central source of conflict for Robin Hood and his band of outlaws. His character design and domineering personality are heavily based on the traditional figure of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

In terms of background, Baron Alwine is a cruel and greedy noble who abuses his power to oppress the common people of Nottingham County. His tyranny is the catalyst for the entire story. He is directly responsible for ordering the destruction of the Huntington family's castle, an attack that forces the young protagonist Robin Hood and his cousins to flee for their lives and seek refuge in Sherwood Forest. His reign of terror is not limited to the nobility, as he also forces peasants into hard labor, which is the reason Little John and his gang were compelled to hide in the forest to escape the baron's oppressive work gangs.

Baron Alwine's personality is defined by greed, ruthlessness, and an unyielding determination to maintain his power. He is shown to be inconsiderate of anyone beneath his station, caring only for his own wealth and authority. His primary motivation throughout the series is to eliminate Robin Hood and his growing band of outlaws, who constantly thwart his plans. Beyond hunting the outlaws, he also pursues the young noblewoman Marian Lancaster. His interest in her is not merely personal; he seeks her out because of a secret carved on a cross she wears, a secret tied to the Lancaster family's wealth which he wishes to claim for himself. To this end, he conspires with his accomplice, the shady Bishop Herfort, who plans to adopt Marian to gain control of her inheritance.

In the story, Baron Alwine is the relentless force driving the conflict. He commands a force of soldiers and often employs ruthless agents to do his bidding. One of his key subordinates is Gilbert, a dangerous and fearless knight who leads the baron's troops in their pursuit of the outlaws. In one notable instance, his determination leads him to discover that Marian has joined Robin's band. In response, he hires three mercenaries commanded by Guy of Guisborne to destroy the outlaws and kidnap Marian, demonstrating his willingness to use any means necessary. His key relationship is with Robin Hood, whom he sees as a direct threat to his control over the county. He also maintains a partnership with Bishop Herfort, who acts as a corrupt ally within the church.

One of the more distinctive aspects of Baron Alwine is his character development towards the end of the series. Unlike a purely one-dimensional villain, the baron undergoes a notable change. Due to Robin Hood's constant interference and a near-death experience at Robin's hands, Alwine begins to reconsider his ways and starts to make a genuine change for the better. However, this redemption is short-lived. He eventually comes across a new plot that would allow him to take over the entire kingdom. The temptation of this immense power proves too strong, and he reverts to his original greedy and inconsiderate nature, becoming a villain once more. His final plan for domination is ultimately stopped by Robin Hood and the newly returned King Richard. As for notable abilities, Baron Alwine's strength lies not in personal combat but in his political authority, his wealth, and his command over a formidable military force, which he uses to tax workers, command soldiers, and enforce his cruel will across Nottingham.
