Description
Daisuke is a minor but recurring character in the Ranma ½ series. He is a student at Furinkan High School and is always seen alongside his best friend, Hiroshi, with the two of them forming a pair that is nearly inseparable.

Physically, Daisuke is distinguished from his friend by his black hair, which is parted in the middle. As a student in Ranma Saotome’s class, Daisuke’s initial role was that of a typical male student at Furinkan. Like the others, he was a member of the informal group known as the "Hentai Horde," which had an enormous crush on Akane Tendo and would regularly challenge her to a fight each morning. This routine came to an end when Ranma’s arrival and his engagement to Akane became known. While Daisuke and Hiroshi were upset by this development, they ultimately accepted the situation and moved on, becoming two of Ranma’s few regular male friends and supporters.

In their capacity as friends, Daisuke and Hiroshi often serve as a sort of peanut gallery, providing commentary on the chaotic events that unfold around Ranma. They are shown to be openly supportive of Ranma in his various fights and competitions. However, their friendship is tinged with a significant amount of jealousy. They frequently comment to each other about how tired they are of Ranma receiving all the attention from the numerous girls in his life. This jealousy extends to Ranma’s martial arts prowess and his string of beautiful fiancées, with Daisuke even jokingly asking Ranma to "give him one" of the girls.

Despite being friends, Daisuke and Hiroshi are also depicted as being somewhat nosy and having perverted tendencies. They are known as gossips who are always eager to learn about and spread stories concerning the details of Ranma’s life. A key part of this dynamic involves Ranma’s Jusenkyo curse, which turns him into a girl when splashed with cold water. Daisuke and Hiroshi eventually learn about the curse, and rather than being horrified, they are often depicted enjoying the sight of Ranma in his female form, noting that they wish there were more girls like her.

While most of the main male characters in Ranma ½ are accomplished martial artists, Daisuke is one of the few characters, alongside Kasumi and Nabiki Tendo, who is never shown practicing any form of martial arts. His role is purely that of a normal schoolboy and spectator to the superhuman conflicts that are a daily occurrence at Furinkan High. His function in the narrative is to provide a grounded, if envious, perspective on Ranma’s extraordinary life. The name Daisuke is a common Japanese name that can be translated to mean "brotherly affection" or "assistance," which aptly fits his role as a supportive, if minor, acquaintance to the protagonist.
