Description
In the original Spanish dub of the Ranma ½ anime, the character known in the original Japanese version as Dr. Tofu Ono is called Dr. Tompu. This change is specific to that particular localisation, with Dr. Tompu referring to the same kind-hearted chiropractor and acupuncturist who runs a small clinic in the Furinkan town. His name in Japanese, Tofu Ono, carries a meaning related to east wind axe, but the Spanish adaptation chose Dr. Tompu as the character's identifier. He is a young medical professional, approximately 23 years old, who operates a clinic specialising in acupuncture and moxibustion, located conveniently near the Tendo Dojo. He has been the family doctor for the Tendo household for a very long time and is well-acquainted with Soun Tendo and his daughters.

In terms of personality, Dr. Tompu is typically portrayed as a very serious, knowledgeable, and professional individual when tending to patients or discussing medical matters. He is well-informed and dedicated to his craft, often playfully referring to his full-sized skeleton model, which he calls Betty, during conversations. However, this serious and competent exterior completely and hilariously crumbles in the presence of Kasumi Tendo, the eldest daughter of the Tendo family. Dr. Tompu harbors a deep, one-sided romantic affection for Kasumi. Unfortunately, whenever he sees her or even speaks to her on the phone, he becomes utterly irrational. His glasses fog up, he loses all focus on his surroundings, and he performs bizarre and often dangerous actions without realising it. For instance, on at least two occasions, after a simple phone call with Kasumi, he grabbed his skeleton model and danced through the streets with it on his back. Witnesses to these outbursts often remark that he is usually such a good doctor, highlighting the extreme and comedic nature of his infatuation. Kasumi herself seems completely unaware of the powerful effect she has on him, dismissing his odd behaviour with her characteristic calm and casual demeanour.

Dr. Tompu’s primary motivation is his genuine care for the well-being of others, especially the Tendo and Saotome families. He uses his medical expertise to help them, often treating the numerous injuries Ranma and Akane suffer from their constant martial arts battles and misadventures. Beyond simple healing, he plays a subtle but significant role in gently pushing the central relationship of the series forward. From early on, he recognises the potential for a relationship between Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendo and skillfully maneuvers them into situations that foster closeness and understanding. In one notable instance, he told Ranma about Akane’s hidden sweet nature and secretly pressed a pressure point on Ranma’s legs. The point was timed to give out exactly as Ranma and Akane were returning home, forcing a resistant Akane to carry Ranma on her back, a moment that softened the dynamic between them.

Within the story, Dr. Tompu is a supporting character of considerable importance in the early volumes of the manga and the corresponding episodes of the anime. His clinic serves as a recurring location where characters go to recover from fights. He has also employed various characters as assistants, including Genma Saotome in his panda form and the Chinese Amazon warrior Shampoo. He is one of the first people to correctly identify the nature of unusual martial arts ailments, such as the Full-body Cat's Tongue pressure point or the Weakness Moxibustion used on Ranma, and directs the characters toward a cure. His role, however, diminishes as the series progresses, and he largely disappears from the manga after volume 13. The anime expands his presence slightly, giving him a few additional episodes, such as one where his mother tries to arrange a marriage for him and another where he helps protect a baby dragon.

His key relationships are defined by his medical practice and his unrequited love. His entire interaction with Kasumi is framed by his extreme, comical nervousness. With Akane, he acts as a caring older brother figure and confidant, someone who has known her since she was a child and who encourages her budding romance with Ranma. Ranma and the other fighters respect his knowledge, though they have learned to keep their distance when Kasumi is nearby.

While Dr. Tompu is primarily a healer, he also possesses notable martial arts abilities. He is acknowledged to be a highly skilled martial artist, though he is never seen engaging in a serious fight in the manga. Instead, he applies his profound knowledge of the human body’s pressure points, or tsubo, in a medical and supportive capacity. His accuracy is so precise that he could strike Ranma in such a way that Ranma’s legs would give out at an exact, predetermined moment later. In an anime-exclusive story, he uses his pressure point techniques to briefly paralyze a frog hermit enemy and his minions, demonstrating that if he ever chose to fight, he would likely be considered a formidable and expert combatant within the series. The character does not undergo significant development, remaining a consistent presence whose main purpose is to provide medical aid and occasionally spark romantic progress before fading into the background as the narrative focus shifts to other characters.
