Description
Bambou is a character who appears in the anime adaptation of Ranma ½. She is a young girl who travels from China to Japan with the initial goal of seeking revenge against Ranma Saotome.

Her background is rooted in a past humiliation she suffered at Ranma's hands. Driven by a need to restore her honor, she confronts him directly. However, the nature of her quest changes dramatically after she engages Ranma in combat. Following their fight, she falls deeply in love with his male form, and her motivation shifts from vengeance to winning his affection and making him her husband.

Bambou's personality is defined by this intense and determined romantic pursuit. She is persistent and resourceful, frequently employing magical items and schemes to achieve her goals. These include using hypnotic mushrooms to make Ranma obey her commands, procuring love potions to make him fall for her, and obtaining magical items like a gong that is said to bring eternal happiness to a couple. Her determination is supported by her two devoted attendants, Rin Rin and Ran Ran, who travel from China to assist her in her mission.

In the story, Bambou serves as one of Ranma's many martial arts rivals and persistent suitors. Her role is further complicated by the involvement of her family, particularly her great-grandmother, an elderly woman named Obada. Obada is a powerful and mysterious figure who pressures Ranma to marry Bambou according to tradition. When Ranma refuses, Obada uses her skills to curse him, making him hypersensitive to hot water so that he can no longer transform back into a boy. This curse drives a significant storyline where Ranma, stuck in his female form, is forced to work as a waitress in the same restaurant as Bambou.

Bambou's key relationships are primarily with Ranma and her great-grandmother. Her interactions with Ranma are a volatile mix of combat, magical coercion, and genuine, if misguided, affection. She is also directly connected to Akane, whom she views as a rival for Ranma's attention. Her relationship with Obada is one of alliance, as her elder actively works to make Bambou's wish to marry Ranma a reality.

Throughout her appearances, Bambou shows little personal development, remaining consistently focused on her goal of claiming Ranma. Her role in the story concludes after a series of adventures, including a winter sports challenge where Ranma wins the right to be cured of Obada's curse, and an incident where she nearly transforms into a cat and is saved by Ranma's kiss. As a character created for the anime, she does not appear in the original manga by Rumiko Takahashi.
