Description
Principal Kuno is the headmaster of Furinkan High School and the father of two prominent students, Tatewaki and Kodachi Kuno. His past is marked by a three-year absence from the school, during which he claimed to be on an educational observation trip to Hawaii. This journey profoundly changed him. Upon his return to Japan, he sports a deep tan, colorful aloha shirts, shorts, sandals, and sunglasses, and he has adopted the mannerisms and speech patterns of the Hawaiian Islands, often greeting others with a boisterous laugh. His given name is never revealed, and he is known only by his title.

His personality is a chaotic blend of authoritarian rule and absurd eccentricity. Principal Kuno is obsessively dedicated to enforcing a strict and ever-changing set of school rules, with a particular fixation on student hairstyles. He is infamous for his decrees that all male students must have buzz cuts and all female students must have bowl cuts, a regulation that puts him into direct conflict with Ranma Saotome, who wishes to keep his distinctive pigtail. The director rules Furinkan High with what could be described as a comedic yet oppressive fist, taking great delight in making his students' lives difficult through a series of pranks, traps, and absurd new regulations. His primary motivation seems to be an uncompromising and bizarre interpretation of discipline and conformity, though his methods are so outlandish that they consistently cause more chaos than order.

In the story, Principal Kuno serves as an antagonist and a source of comedic disruption. He sees Ranma Saotome and his own son, Tatewaki, as the most problematic students in the school's history and dedicates considerable effort to subduing them. To this end, he occasionally reveals a surprising level of cunning, such as hiring the teacher Hinako Ninomiya specifically to drain the energy of troublesome students. Despite his antagonistic role, there are moments when he exhibits an unorthodox and sincere, if ineffective, concern for his students' well-being, such as when he attempts to help Akane Tendo overcome her fear of swimming, albeit with absurd training methods like dressing her in a swan costume or covering her with flotation devices.

His key relationships are primarily defined by conflict. His connection with his son, Tatewaki, is especially strained. As a child, Tatewaki was subjected to having his head forcibly shaved by his father, a traumatic memory that has left a lasting emotional scar and fuels a deep resentment between them. Their reunion after the principal's three-year absence is characterized not by warmth, but by Tatewaki's disgust and irritation. In contrast, his relationship with his daughter, Kodachi, is more distant; in the anime, she is depicted as having been unaware she had a father for many years, and while she loves him, she resents that he prioritizes harassing his students over spending time with his family. Despite the animosity, the principal uses affectionate nicknames for his children, calling Tatewaki Tachi and Kodachi Kochi.

While there is little traditional character development for Principal Kuno, who remains a constant source of chaos, there are nuances to his portrayal. On rare occasions, he shows glimpses of a more caring side, such as hurting his own fingers while sewing unconventional teaching aids for Akane, revealing that his desire to teach her to swim, however misguided, was genuine. Furthermore, the very absence that transformed him implies a past self; before his sojourn in Hawaii, he dressed in traditional Japanese clothing and had a much more serious demeanor. This suggests his obsessive Hawaiian persona is a later, if permanent, development.

Despite his comical and often foolish behavior, Principal Kuno is a surprisingly capable fighter. His most notable ability is the Wooden Sword Shredder, a secret Kuno family technique that allows him to use an opponent's wooden sword as a ramp to slice their hair and destroy the weapon in one swift motion. He is also skilled with a standard pair of shears, which he wields at incredible speeds. His combat style incorporates his Hawaiian obsession, as seen in attacks like the Pineapple Bomb. He is a master of disguise, able to assume new identities quickly, though their constant Hawaiian theme often makes them easy to see through. His tactical mind is formidable; he is an adept strategist who uses a wide variety of gadgets, trained animals, and elaborate traps to corner his targets, and his fighting ability is such that he is considered a strong character, capable of holding his own against a martial artist of Ranma Saotome's caliber.
