Description
Chang Wu Fei is a central character who pilots the XXXG-01S Shenlong Gundam and its upgraded form, the XXXG-01S2 Altron Gundam, which he personally calls Nataku. His background is rooted in a long lineage of warriors from the Long Clan, who were exiled from China to the L5 Colony Cluster. As an heir of this clan, he was married at the age of fourteen to a fellow warrior named Meiran Long in an arranged union. Initially, Wu Fei was more inclined toward scholarly studies than combat, which put him at odds with his wife, who embodied the fierce fighting spirit of the clan. This dynamic changed forever when their colony was attacked by the United Earth Sphere Alliance and OZ forces. Meiran charged into battle and was mortally wounded, dying in Wu Fei's arms. Determined to carry on her fight for justice, he took her name for his own cause, renamed his Gundam "Nataku" in her honor, and joined Operation Meteor as a Gundam pilot.

Wu Fei's personality is defined by a strict, almost rigid code of honor and a fierce disdain for what he perceives as weakness. He is stoic and often remains calm in situations that would trouble others, yet he is also prone to intense emotional outbursts, particularly when confronted with conflicting ideologies or when his sense of justice is challenged. He tends to look down on those he sees as weak and prefers to operate alone, believing that a warrior must be strong to enact justice. Despite his anger and willingness to use deceptive tactics in battle, such as a surprise bombing of enemy barracks, he possesses a peculiar and unwavering sense of honor. This is best exemplified when he chose to board an enemy ship for a fair sword duel rather than destroy it easily with his Gundam, and when he accepted defeat with grace, refusing to kill an opponent who had bested him. He also holds a personal rule against killing women and children, a direct consequence of his wife's death. Fundamentally, Wu Fei is driven by the motivation to crush evil and protect the innocent, though his definition of these terms evolves significantly through his experiences.

In the original Gundam Wing series, Wu Fei's role is that of a solitary and often volatile warrior who struggles to reconcile his ideals with the grim realities of war. His path is heavily defined by his rivalry with the charismatic OZ leader, Treize Khushrenada. After losing a sword duel to Treize, Wu Fei spirals into a crisis of confidence, doubting his own strength and purpose. He is later rehabilitated by the rebel leader Sally Po, who helps him overcome his insecurities and rejoin the fight. His key relationships are fraught with conflict; he distrusts Zechs Merquise and frequently clashes with his fellow Gundam pilot Heero Yuy over their differing methods and philosophies. His development throughout the series culminates in his final confrontation with Treize, where he impales his rival's mobile suit only to realize that Treize allowed himself to be killed. This hollow victory leaves Wu Fei wracked with grief, shouting that he did not truly win, an event that profoundly shapes his later actions.

By the time of Endless Waltz, Wu Fei is sixteen years old and deeply dissatisfied with the post-war world. Unable to accept the Earth Sphere Unified Nation's policy of complete pacifism, he believes that the peace bought with the blood of fallen soldiers is an insult to their sacrifice. Consequently, he refuses to send his Gundam into the sun with the others and instead joins the rebel Mariemaia Army, seeking to test whether such a peace can truly be called just. In this role, he serves as an antagonist to his former allies, engaging Heero Yuy in a series of intense duels where their clashing philosophies take center stage. Wu Fei argues that he is the spokesman for all those who were treated as weapons and then forgotten, finding his only meaning on the battlefield. His development concludes when Heero forces him to realize that continuing to fight would only lead to more catastrophic destruction, like the loss of his own colony. Moved by the sight of ordinary citizens rising up in protest, Wu Fei abandons his rebellion, self-destructs his beloved Gundam Nataku with the words "sleep in peace," and ultimately joins Sally Po's secret peacekeeping organization, the Preventers, finding a new way to serve justice.

Wu Fei possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable pilot. He is an expert in close-quarters combat, excelling in both swordsmanship and hand-to-hand fighting. His skills are so renowned that OZ strategists once ordered their soldiers to avoid engaging him in one-on-one combat, opting to overwhelm him with numbers instead. Despite his warrior persona, he is also highly intelligent and tactical, having originally been a scholar, and is often able to see through enemy traps and formulate efficient strategies where his fellow pilots cannot. He is also one of the few pilots who can interface with the mentally overwhelming Zero System and maintain a relatively sound mind, demonstrating his incredible willpower and mental fortitude.
