Description
Dr. Owen is a paleontologist and colleague of Dr. Spike Taylor. He discovered an infant Rex inside a strange pod at the feet of a Barosaurus skeleton display in the New York Museum of Natural History, choosing to adopt him. As a traveling scientist whose work interfered with childcare, he later sent Rex to live with the Taylor family to provide a stable environment, stemming from his greatest desire to give Rex the best possible upbringing.
He has short dirty blond hair, turquoise eyes, and wears glasses. His typical attire includes a hat, an aquamarine shirt with a brown vest, brown pants, matching stockings, and 18th-century-style shoes. Professionally, he maintains scientific curiosity and expertise, analyzing a rotting tooth on Terry the Tyrannosaurus without showing fear. His personality also exhibits childlike enthusiasm, displaying excessive happiness over dinosaur topics or performing a special dance with Dr. Taylor. He can become temperamental when his scientific input is ignored.
His first significant appearance occurs when he informs the D-Team about discovering two dinosaur cards (Ace the Carnotaurus and Paris the Parasaurolophus) in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Taylor had previously informed him about the cards, making him the only person outside the D-Lab privy to this information. He assists the D-Team logistically, such as using his car's extending wheels to bypass traffic in New York during "The Big Apple Grapple." In this episode, he develops an unreciprocated romantic infatuation with Ursula of the Alpha Gang, proposing to her with a dinosaur bone ring to provide Rex with a mother figure. This pursuit recurs, including another rejected proposal after the defeat of the Spectral Space Pirates.
He appears globally supporting paleontological efforts or encountering D-Team conflicts. In "Lights, Camera, Destruction!", he works on a dinosaur movie in Hollywood, where Ursula mistakes him for an actor after he dons a costume. In "A Kyoto Caper," he protects Ursula (disguised as a geisha) from a Fukuisaurus, deducing its attraction to shiny objects. His role expands during the "Mesozoic Meltdown" arc when he attempts to meet Rex's biological parents, Drs. Ancient and Cretacia. Though initially missing their departure, he witnesses Gabbro teleporting the Taylor house and reports it. Later, he, Patrick, and Reese are cornered by Seth's Cryolophosaurus at the D-Lab to lure back the D-Team. After the conflict's resolution, he remains in the present while Rex leaves for the future.
A minor trivia note from external sources suggests his first name might be "Foster," though this is contested as potentially referencing his adoptive role rather than his birth name. His scientific contributions include discovering the Dinomond amber and identifying the aforementioned dinosaur cards.
