Description
Rod is Dr. Z's grandson and Laura's older brother, both members of the Alpha Gang. He has slightly tanned skin, spiky black hair, thick eyebrows, and black eyes. His attire features a mechanic-inspired jumpsuit, aviator-style leather helmet with goggles, and a belt displaying the Alpha Gang symbol; alternate media depict him in a bike helmet, white tank top, and shorts.
Rod exhibits exceptional intelligence in scientific and mechanical fields, honed by advanced future education. Though skilled in dinosaur battles and strategy, he is frequently confined to Zeta Point by the robotic caretaker Helga, who enforces his academic studies, including subjects like general relativity. Initially supporting Dr. Z’s goal to collect dinosaur cards for repairing their timeship and reuniting with their parents, Rod and Laura occasionally betray the D-Team’s trust during missions. Their alliance shifts after uncovering Seth’s betrayal and Dr. Z’s role in stranding them in the present, fostering cooperation with the D-Team.
In the first season, Rod mostly stays on Zeta Point but joins pivotal missions. He lures the D-Team using sound waves and battles them during "Carnival of Chaos," summoning dinosaurs like Terry. Seth recruits Rod and Laura for dinosaur captures due to their superior combat skills over the Alpha Trio, providing them the Velociraptor Move card. During "Santa Saurus!", Rod and Laura abandon a card-theft mission after encountering maternal kindness from Max’s mother, opting for sentimental gifts instead. When Seth betrays the Alpha Gang, Rod hacks Zeta Point’s defenses, summoning Tank and Ampelosaurus against Saurophaganax. Following defeats, he forces Dr. Z to ally with the D-Team. In the finale, Rod coordinates a Super Fusion Move with Spiny, Ampelosaurus, and Deinonychus to defeat the Black T. rex.
Season two sees Rod and Laura accidentally stranded in the present when Dr. Z departs on the partially repaired timeship. They assist Reese Drake at D-Lab until a temporal anomaly triggers a plant invasion endangering them. Rescued by the D-Team, they join the Backlander’s crew as observers. Rod later thwarts Seth’s takeover of the ship by melting Gel Jarks with salt and retrieves dropped Cosmos Stones. The season concludes with Rod returning to the future alongside the Ancients and Alpha Gang.
The manga depicts Rod speaking with an Australian accent, using colloquialisms like "bloke" and "reckon." He battles Max using Torosaurus but loses, leading to brief camaraderie over shared dinosaur enthusiasm before recognizing their opposing allegiances. He warns Max about Laura’s temperament, calling her his "ankle biter sister."
Across video games, Rod appears as an early boss in the DS version, primarily deploying Lightning-element dinosaurs including Chasmosaurus, Torosaurus, Alpha Einiosaurus, and Saichania. His name "Roto" derives from reversing the syllables of "Torosaurus" in Japanese, reflecting his affinity for ceratopsians. The arcade game features him on collectible Character Cards that change narrators or unlock special modes.
Rod’s dinosaur usage evolves throughout the series. Initially borrowing Terry, Spiny, or Tank, he later commands captured wild dinosaurs like Ampelosaurus and Deinonychus during critical battles. While his manga and game counterparts favor Lightning-element dinosaurs, his anime counterpart often employs Fire or Water types when teaming with Laura.
Rod maintains a close partnership with Laura, acting in unison during missions and battles. Both share deep concern over their family’s unresolved history, particularly Dr. Z’s sabotage of the Ancients’ time-travel mission, uncovered mid-series. This revelation catalyzes their shift from antagonists to D-Team allies.
