Description
Hikozaemon Otaki is a supporting character in the anime Oh My Goddess! and a student at Nekomi Institute of Technology, where he serves as one of the co-directors of the university's Motor Club alongside his inseparable friend, Toraichi Tamiya. A tall, muscular young man with a long face, square jaw, tanned skin, and dusty blonde hair styled in a punk fashion, Otaki is almost always seen wearing dark, round-lensed sunglasses and a black leather jacket, with sparkplugs serving as his earrings. This distinct, biker-inspired appearance reflects his rough and mischievous personality, though beneath his loud and sometimes overbearing exterior lies a genuinely good-natured individual.
Otaki’s primary motivation stems from a deep-seated passion for machines, particularly motorcycles and cars, and a strong belief in not discarding anything that can be fixed or salvaged. This philosophy drives much of his involvement in the Motor Club, where he often finds himself in the role of a chaotic but well-meaning mentor to his junior, Keiichi Morisato. Though Otaki and Tamiya can be lazy and irresponsible, frequently pushing their work onto other club members, they fundamentally care about their juniors and will offer help, even if it is often accompanied by creating new problems for them to solve. This dynamic is established early on when they evict Keiichi and Belldandy from the men's dormitory for breaking the no-girls rule, an act that inadvertently sets the stage for the couple’s new life together.
Within the story, Otaki’s role is primarily that of a reliable senior who provides comic relief and mechanical support. His key relationships are central to his character. His partnership with Tamiya is one of a long-standing, boisterous duo who share a history within the club, including a mutual, unrequited crush on the club's founder, Chihiro Fujimi. Otaki's most significant personal storyline involves his romantic interest in Satoko Yamano, a freshman electronics student. With the subtle assistance of Keiichi and Belldandy, this relationship develops after he comes to her aid by fixing her broken scooter. The courtship famously reaches a humorous milestone when Otaki impresses Satoko’s father by bravely extinguishing a grease fire during a tense dinner.
While Otaki does not exhibit notable supernatural abilities, his prowess lies in his mechanical expertise. He is a gifted mechanic with an intuitive understanding of engines and vehicles, a skill he frequently uses to help (and sometimes complicate the lives of) his friends. Over the course of the series, Otaki shows some development as he transitions from a carefree upperclassman to a graduate student and Senate member of the Motor Vehicle Ministry, passing leadership of the Motor Club to Keiichi and becoming more settled, particularly through his relationship with Satoko.
