Description
Hikozaemon Ōtaki is a character from the anime Oh My Goddess!, recognized as one of the senior members and founders of the Automobile Club at Nekomi Institute of Technology. Alongside his close companion Toraichi Tamiya, Ōtaki serves as an upperclassman to the protagonist, Keiichi Morisato, and continues to be involved with the club even as a graduate student, holding a position within its student government.
In terms of appearance, Ōtaki is often seen wearing sunglasses and has dyed yellow hair, a look that, together with his friend's muscular build, gives the pair a rough and intimidating biker aesthetic. This exterior, however, belies a fundamentally good-natured character. His personality is rough, mischievous, and prone to causing trouble. For instance, he was instrumental in expelling Keiichi from the men's dormitory for the sake of being with Belldandy and has a habit of bringing piles of junk to the club, ordering his junior to fix them.
While he and Tamiya often function as comedic obstacles, creating chaos and lazy messes, their motivations are not malicious. They genuinely help Keiichi in their own roundabout way, which often involves causing problems that force him to find solutions. Their laziness is prominently displayed during a training camp by the sea when they work at a shop called Whirlwind for Chihiro Fujimi. The two seniors are so neglectful that they turn the store into a pigsty, leading to a confrontation where Chihiro threatens to dress them as women and parade them around the university if they do not clean it up themselves.
Ōtaki’s key relationships revolve around his fellow club members. He has a long history with Tamiya, with the two often working as a gag duo. He also shares a past connection with Chihiro Fujimi, as it is implied that both he and Tamiya once had a crush on her. Regarding romantic development, Ōtaki shows interest in a junior named Satoko Yamano, the daughter of the university president, suggesting a potential relationship there, in contrast to Tamiya’s more unfortunate romantic experiences.
In terms of abilities, Ōtaki does not possess supernatural powers. Instead, his notable skills are practical, centered on mechanical knowledge and engineering, typical of a senior student in the automobile club. He is capable of fixing and modifying vehicles. The character also carries subtle development as part of a generational archetype; as a university student during the economic bubble era of the 1980s, his carefree, lazy, yet entrepreneurial spirit reflects the values and disconnect from reality characteristic of that time in Japan.
