TV-Series
Description
Rex Owen, originally named Rex Ancient, stands among the three central protagonists alongside Max Taylor and Zoe Drake. Born to renowned paleontologists Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia during their time-travel expedition to the Mesozoic Era from 2126 A.D., his infancy was defined by conflict with the antagonist Dr. Z. This confrontation resulted in Rex being transported to the present day and discovered at the Smithsonian Museum by paleontologist Dr. Owen, who adopted him. Due to Dr. Owen's frequent fossil excavation travels, Rex lived under Spike Taylor's guardianship as a ward of the Taylor family.
Reserved, thoughtful, and cautious by nature, Rex often clashes with Max Taylor's impulsiveness during their adventures. Despite his quiet demeanor, he demonstrates fierce loyalty, intelligence beyond his years, and profound compassion for friends and dinosaurs. His passion for paleontology manifests through treasured possessions like a trilobite fossil and dinosaur book, with their loss evoking deep emotional reactions. A crush on Zoe Drake occasionally complicates group dynamics, yet never undermines his steadfast reliability in crises.
Rex's journey escalates when he, Max, and Zoe discover meteorite fragments granting powers to summon and partner with dinosaurs. He bonds with a Carnotaurus named Ace, commanding wind-element abilities to direct the dinosaur's speed-based attacks. Ace complements Rex's strategic mindset but harbors a fear of large bodies of water. Rex and Ace frequently join forces with Max's Triceratops, Chomp, confronting adversaries like the Alpha Gang's Saichania.
His background unfolds across the series, revealing his true parentage and origin. Rex reunites with Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia in the "Mesozoic Meltdown" arc, where they reclaim dinosaur cards and element stones. Accompanied by the Alpha Gang and allies, they travel to 2126 via the timeship Backlander but face attacks from Spectral Space Pirates, leading to the kidnapping of the D-Team's parents. Rex participates in time-hopping missions to rescue them and gather Cosmos Stones, culminating in a battle against pirate leader Seth. Victorious, the group returns to the future aboard the pirates' damaged spaceship—limited to one voyage. This forces Rex to permanently separate from Max and Zoe, accepting life in 2126 with his family.
In alternate media, the manga portrays Rex as an American transfer student in Japan, initially grappling with language barriers. His friendship with Max sparks over shared dinosaur enthusiasm, symbolized by their joint ownership of a broken fossil. Rex also habitually tracks favors, such as counting owed puddings. The DS game adaptation allows players to select Rex as a protagonist, starting with Ace as his partner, though core story events remain consistent regardless of choice.
