Description
**Roto**, known as Rod in English-language media, is the grandson of Dr. Z and older brother of Laura. Hailing from 2127, he joined Dr. Z’s time-travel mission aboard the Backlander to rescue dinosaurs from extinction on Christmas Day. Sabotage by Dr. Z and Seth caused a crash landing in the present, though Roto initially remained unaware of their involvement.

He has slightly tanned skin, spiky black hair, and prominent black eyebrows. His mechanic-inspired attire typically includes a jumpsuit, glasses, and a hat or aviator’s leather helmet with goggles in the anime, often paired with a belt displaying the Alpha Gang symbol. Alternate designs in media like the arcade game feature a bike helmet, white tank top, mechanic gloves, and shorts.

Intellectually advanced due to future education, Roto excels in mechanics, scientific research, and dinosaur battles. He frequently repairs technology and strategizes for Dr. Z and Seth, outperforming the Alpha Trio (Ursula, Zander, Ed). However, he and Laura are confined to Zeta Point under the supervision of Helga, a robotic caretaker he fears. His loyalty to the Alpha Gang’s dinosaur-card-collecting mission stems from a belief it will repair the time machine and reunite him with his parents.

During the first season, Roto aids key operations: locating the D-Team via sound waves at Zeta Point, battling opponents with dinosaurs Terry (Tyrannosaurus), Spiny (Spinosaurus), and Tank (Saichania), and advising the Alpha Trio. In the finale, he temporarily commands Ampelosaurus and Deinonychus against Seth’s Saurophaganax and Black T. rex, coordinating a Super Fusion Move to defeat the latter. A pivotal revelation of Dr. Z’s sabotage in the timeship crash—which separated Rex from his parents—prompts Roto to force Dr. Z into an alliance with the D-Team, beginning his shift from antagonist to ally.

In *Mesozoic Meltdown* (Season 2), Roto becomes stranded in the present with Laura and Reese Drake after Dr. Z departs prematurely on the repaired Backlander. He aids resistance against Spectral Space Pirates by melting Seth’s Gel Jarks with salt and retrieving six Cosmos Stones during a confrontation. Eventually, he rejoins the Backlander as an observer and returns to the future with the dinosaur cards after the Pirates’ defeat.

The manga depicts Roto with an Australian accent, using colloquialisms like "bloke" and "cobbers." He battles Max Taylor but develops mutual respect over shared dinosaur enthusiasm, notably admiring a Torosaurus. After defeat, he grows amicable and warns Max about Laura’s tenacity. In the DS game, he appears as an early boss deploying Lightning-element dinosaurs: Chasmosaurus, Torosaurus, Alpha Einiosaurus, and Styracosaurus.

Roto evolves from a loyal Alpha Gang member pursuing family ambitions to a cooperative figure valuing truth and alliances. His relationship with Laura remains central, with consistent mutual support across media. Mechanical prowess, strategic ingenuity in dinosaur battles, and eventual moral realignment define his arc.
