TV-Series
Description
Baki is a jonin, or elite ninja, from the hidden village of Sunagakure, also known as the Village Hidden in the Sand. He serves as a high-ranking member of the village's advisory council and is a trusted operative, having been placed in charge of the team consisting of the Fourth Kazekage's three children: Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro. Information from official data books lists his birth date as July 4, and during the events of the second part of the series, he is 34 years old. He stands at 188.2 centimeters tall. His appearance is marked by the standard Suna jonin uniform, which he wears alongside a cloth turban that covers part of his face, revealing only his left eye. He also has purple face paint similar to that worn by his student, Kankuro.
In terms of personality, Baki embodies the ideals of a Suna shinobi. He is loyal, respected, and possesses a great deal of confidence born from his battle experience. Like many from his village, he is ruthless and stern when engaged in combat, prioritizing the completion of a mission over personal camaraderie. This stern exterior, however, does not mean he is without concern for his subordinates. He is frequently seen worrying about the mental stability of Gaara and his ability to control the tailed beast, Shukaku, sealed within him. He also demonstrates a pragmatic understanding of his students' capabilities, once noting that Kankuro did not take his battles seriously enough. His core motivation is the protection and interest of his village and country. He acts decisively in what he believes to be Suna's best interest, showing a soldier-like patriotism.
Baki's primary role in the story begins during the Chunin Exams, where he is introduced as the sensei escorting the Sand siblings to the Hidden Leaf Village. It is later revealed that this is a cover for a planned invasion of Konoha, orchestrated in alliance with the Hidden Sound Village. Baki serves as a key liaison for this plot. In a pivotal act that sets the invasion in motion, he assassinates a Leaf jonin, Hayate Gekko, who had accidentally discovered a covert meeting between Baki and a spy from the Sound. During the invasion, he leads the Sand forces in the attack and engages in a prolonged battle with the Leaf jonin Genma Shiranui. However, his character undergoes a significant development when the Sand ninjas discover the body of their true Kazekage, who had been killed and impersonated by Orochimaru, the leader of the Sound. Realizing they were manipulated as pawns, Baki immediately breaks off the alliance and his village reconciles with the Leaf. In the second part of the series, following Gaara's appointment as the Fifth Kazekage, Baki is seen as a member of the Suna council. He demonstrates his loyalty to the new Kazekage by ordering the village's evacuation during an Akatsuki attack and, when Gaara is kidnapped, takes the initiative to recruit the village's retired elders, Chiyo and Ebizo, to assist in the rescue mission.
Key relationships define his actions. He is the direct teacher and mentor to Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro, holding a position of trust from their father, the Fourth Kazekage. He maintains a professional and respectful relationship with the village elders, and after Gaara proves himself a stable and powerful leader, Baki shows him absolute deference, bowing and using honorifics. His most significant antagonistic relationship is with the Leaf ninja Yugao Uzuki, the fiancée of Hayate Gekko, whom he killed. Yugao swears vengeance against him, and it remains unresolved whether this conflict is ever settled.
Regarding his notable abilities, Baki is considered a powerful and highly skilled jonin. His signature technique is the Blade of Wind, a Wind Release jutsu that allows him to create an intangible, razor-sharp blade of air with a mere gesture of his hand. He claims this blade cannot be blocked, as it has no physical form to stop, and he used it to effortlessly cut through Hayate Gekko's sword and kill him. He has also demonstrated formidable defensive capabilities, such as blocking a sword strike with his bare hand. Official records state that over his career, he has completed a total of 694 official missions, a number that includes 11 S-rank missions, the highest level of difficulty.
