Description
Gamakichi is a toad from the mystical region known as Mount Myoboku and serves as the eldest son of the great toad chieftain, Gamabunta. He is also the older brother of a younger toad named Gamatatsu. As a member of a prominent toad family, Gamakichi enters into a summoning contract with the ninja Naruto Uzumaki, eventually becoming his personal summoning animal and a reliable ally in battle.
When first introduced, Gamakichi is remarkably small, small enough to perch comfortably on top of Naruto's head while wearing a tiny blue jacket. Despite his diminutive stature, his personality is immediately noticeable. He possesses a comedic and sharp-tongued nature, often acting like a smart aleck who prefers lighthearted banter over the seriousness of a fight. He is frequently condescending in a joking manner, and his casual way of greeting others with a simple "Yo" reflects his laid-back, irreverent attitude. This initial encounter happens when Naruto, attempting to summon the mighty Gamabunta during a desperate battle, instead produces the small but spirited Gamakichi due to his own lack of chakra control. Despite the inconvenience, Naruto protects the young toad from harm, an act that forms the foundation of their enduring friendship.
As the series progresses, Gamakichi experiences rapid physical growth that parallels Naruto's own development as a ninja. By the time of the Pain arc, he has grown large enough for Naruto to stand on his head, and by the Fourth Great Ninja War, he has reached a colossal size nearly equal to that of his father, standing at approximately 16.9 meters tall. Alongside this physical transformation, his personality matures considerably. He sheds much of his immature, bratty demeanor and gains a deeper understanding of combat strategy and natural energy, the force used to perform senjutsu, or sage techniques. He also adopts some of his father's signature mannerisms, including smoking a cigarette and developing a matching ego, which Naruto comments on with familiarity.
His key relationships center almost entirely on his family and his bond with Naruto. As the eldest son, he shares a strong bond with Gamabunta, who is quick to come to his son's defense when danger arises. His relationship with his younger brother, Gamatatsu, evolves from one of impatience and name-calling to a more tolerant and cooperative partnership. However, his most significant connection is with Naruto. Beyond being just a summoner and servant, they share a genuine friendship built on mutual respect and loyalty. Gamakichi respects Naruto for saving his life early on, and Naruto relies on Gamakichi as a trusted comrade rather than just a tool for battle.
In terms of role in the story, Gamakichi operates as a supportive combatant and, at times, a source of comic relief. He assists Naruto during critical missions, including the infiltration of Orochimaru's hideout, the search for the Three-Tails, and the final confrontation with Pain, where he dutifully carries the injured Tsunade to safety. His most pivotal moment comes during the Fourth Great Ninja War. As Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura perform a combined summoning, Gamakichi appears wielding a giant tantō (short sword) to fight the monstrous Ten-Tails. In this battle, he demonstrates his profound growth as a warrior. Using a Senjutsu-enhanced technique called Water Release: Starch Syrup Gun, he attacks Obito, the series' primary antagonist. Although the attack does not defeat Obito, its effect reveals a crucial weakness: the antagonist cannot use his reality-altering abilities to negate ninjutsu that has been empowered by senjutsu. This discovery provides Naruto and the Allied Shinobi Forces with the key strategy needed to eventually defeat their foe.
His notable abilities are diverse and grow increasingly powerful over time. Like all toads of Mount Myoboku, he has an affinity for senjutsu, allowing him to sense and manipulate natural energy. He primarily wields a large sword with proficiency, using it to deflect powerful projectiles with ease. His signature technique is the Starch Syrup Gun, a Water Release ability that produces a viscous, sticky fluid to trap or impede enemies. In anime-exclusive storylines, he also demonstrates the use of Fire Release techniques, combining them with Naruto's Wind Release and his brother's toad oil to create massive, destructive flame attacks. Gamakichi starts as a minor character of little consequence but develops into a formidable giant, inheriting his father's role and fighting alongside his summoner as an equal partner in the world's most dangerous conflict.
