Description
Zaku Abumi is a minor antagonist from the Hidden Sound Village, Otogakure, who first appears as a participant in the Chunin Exams. He is a member of Team Dosu, a trio of genin sent by the rogue ninja Orochimaru to infiltrate the Hidden Leaf Village. Zaku is a young man of fourteen years with spiky dark hair and dark eyes. His attire consists of a beige shirt marked with two black stripes and three prints of the kanji for death. Like his teammates, he wears a snake-patterned scarf, symbolizing his allegiance to Orochimaru, and his forehead protector is distinctively shaped, resembling that of Yamato.
Zaku's background is one of poverty and survival. Before becoming a ninja, he was an orphan living on the streets, often stealing food to survive and frequently being beaten for it. It was during one such beating that Orochimaru discovered him. Seeing potential in the boy's anger and survival instincts, Orochimaru offered him power and a place to belong in exchange for absolute loyalty. Zaku accepted this offer, swearing never to give up, and was subsequently taken in by the Hidden Sound Village. Unbeknownst to Zaku, Orochimaru viewed him and his teammates as disposable tools rather than valued subordinates.
In terms of personality, Zaku is defined by his arrogance and overconfidence. He places great faith in his own unique powers and often underestimates his opponents, believing that no one can defeat him. He is prone to showing off and speaking his mind without regard for the consequences, such as when he openly insults Choji Akimichi about his weight or brags about harming Sakura Haruno. These actions often lead directly to his own suffering. Despite his bravado and tendency to be a hothead, he displays moments of loyalty to his team, such as when he used his abilities to soften the ground to break a teammate's fall. His ferocious loyalty to Orochimaru is a core part of his identity, driving him to undergo dangerous body modifications and fight with a tenacity that refuses to acknowledge defeat, even when severely injured.
Zaku's role in the story is primarily as an obstacle for the main characters during the Chunin Exam arc. He and his team are antagonists tasked with eliminating Sasuke Uchiha as a test of the latter's abilities. He engages in a fight with Sakura and later with Rock Lee and the members of Team 10. After Sasuke awakens from Orochimaru's cursed seal, Zaku takes credit for injuring Sakura, which prompts the enraged Sasuke to brutally dislocate both of his arms.
His most significant development occurs during the tournament preliminaries. Despite having one arm in a sling from his previous fight, he is matched against Shino Aburame. When Shino advises him to forfeit, Zaku refuses out of pride and determination. He frees his injured arm to unleash his most powerful technique. However, this plays directly into Shino's plan, as he had secretly filled the air tubes in Zaku's arms with his parasitic insects. When Zaku fires his attack, the insects block the tubes, causing the immense air pressure to backfire and destroy his arms from the inside out. This defeat is both physical and psychological, as his greatest weapons are turned against him by a more strategic opponent.
Zaku's story concludes shortly after his defeat. During the subsequent invasion of the Hidden Leaf Village, Orochimaru uses him as a living sacrifice. Zaku, along with his teammate Kin, is bound and used as a vessel for the Impure World Reincarnation technique, summoning the souls of the First and Second Hokage. This act results in his death, fulfilling Orochimaru's original intention of using him as a disposable pawn.
Zaku's notable abilities are derived from unnatural body modifications performed by Orochimaru. He has hollow air tubes surgically implanted that run through his arms and open through holes in his palms. By channeling his chakra, he can project a powerful combination of air pressure and sound waves from these openings. His primary techniques are Decapitating Airwaves and the more powerful Extreme Decapitating Airwaves, which can cut through stone and knock back opponents. He can also use this ability to create a cushion of air to soften a fall. However, this power has a critical and fatal flaw if the openings in his arms are blocked, the pressure will backfire and cause catastrophic, self-inflicted damage.
