Description
Hanzaki Fuuma is a character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Naruto. His sole appearance occurs in a single episode, making him a non-canon figure not present in the original manga series. He is introduced during a mission in the Land of Rice Fields, also known as the Land of Sound, where he is established as the leader of a remnant branch of the Fuma clan.
Hanzaki’s background is tied directly to the rise of Orochimaru, the infamous rogue ninja from Konohagakure. Years before the main events of the story, Orochimaru arrived in the Land of Rice Fields to establish his hidden village, Otogakure. He approached the Fuma clan, promising them great power and a revival of their clan’s glory in exchange for their loyalty. Many members of the clan were seduced by this offer and became his followers, but Hanzaki was among the few who refused. He distrusted Orochimaru’s intentions and led a faction of the clan that rejected his offer. For this defiance, Hanzaki and his followers were driven out of their village by those who supported the alliance with Orochimaru. After the Fuma clan was eventually destroyed or scattered following a conflict, Hanzaki’s group turned to banditry and thievery to survive in the wilderness of the Land of Rice Fields.
As the head of his faction, Hanzaki’s personality is a mix of pragmatism and defiance. He is a hardened survivor, willing to kill and rob travelers to provide for his people. When first encountered by the legendary ninja Jiraiya, Hanzaki initially shows a form of respect, claiming he will let Jiraiya live in exchange for his money. However, this bravado quickly turns to sheer terror when he realizes he is facing one of the Three Legendary Sannin. Despite his rough and bandit-like exterior, Hanzaki is not entirely without principle. He harbors a deep and intense anger toward Orochimaru for deceiving and corrupting so many of his clansmen and for his role in their downfall.
Physically, Hanzaki is a middle-aged man with a muscular and imposing build. He has long, straight black hair and dark eyes. He wears a distinctive sleeveless cloak with white and purple panels over a simple black shirt, paired with pale purple pants secured at the waist by a white rope. A red band is worn around his forehead. His most prominent accessory is a massive, thick-bladed sword called a Zanbato, which he carries strapped to his back with a heavy rope.
In terms of abilities, Hanzaki is a close-range combat specialist who relies on his formidable physical strength and his oversized sword. He does not demonstrate any knowledge of ninjutsu or supernatural techniques in his appearance. Despite this lack of mystical power, he possesses remarkable physical resilience. Notably, he is able to stand up almost immediately after taking a direct hit from Jiraiya’s Rasengan, a powerful spinning sphere of chakra, which also sends him flying through a wall.
Hanzaki’s role in the story is brief and serves as an initial obstacle for Jiraiya and a source of information. He and his group lure Jiraiya to their hideout with the intention of robbing him. Jiraiya soundly defeats Hanzaki and his subordinates with ease. After learning the true identity of his opponent, a panicked Hanzaki gives Jiraiya all the information he has about Otogakure and Orochimaru’s activities. Later, after the confrontation at Orochimaru’s hideout concludes, Jiraiya asks Hanzaki to take in and protect two orphaned girls, Sasame and Kotohime. Hanzaki accepts this responsibility, and his final status is presumed to be alive as he is last seen following Jiraiya’s request.
