Description
Hayate Gekko is a supporting character from the village of Konohagakure, holding the rank of Tokubetsu Jonin. This rank indicates he is a ninja with exceptional skill in a specific area, in his case, swordsmanship and covert operations. His ninja registration number is 011671, and he was born on November 2nd. At the time of his introduction, he is 23 years old, stands 175 centimeters tall, and has an AB blood type.

Visually, Hayate is recognized by his pale complexion, dark hair tied back with a forehead protector, and notably, prominent dark circles under his eyes. He is often seen coughing, which contributes to an overall sickly and fatigued appearance. This physical frailty belies his capabilities as a ninja, as he is a calm and composed individual with a strong sense of duty to his village. Despite his intimidating appearance, he is described as being individualistic and gentle. He speaks formally and politely when officiating or dealing with ninja from other villages, but uses more casual speech in private settings.

His primary role in the story is as the proctor for the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exams. In this capacity, he oversees the one-on-one battles that determine which participants advance to the final round. During these matches, he demonstrates his quick reflexes and sharp judgment, such as when he swiftly intervenes to stop a fight from going too far. Shortly after the preliminary rounds conclude, Hayate is assigned to a surveillance mission. He observes a covert meeting between Baki, a Jonin from the Hidden Sand Village, and Kabuto Yakushi, who is acting as a spy for Orochimaru. Overhearing their plot to invade Konoha, Hayate is discovered. In the ensuing confrontation, he is killed by Baki, marking one of the first significant casualties of the impending invasion. Following his death, his duties as proctor for the final exam are assumed by his fellow Tokubetsu Jonin, Genma Shiranui.

Hayate Gekko is in a romantic relationship with Yugao Uzuki, a member of Konoha's elite Anbu black ops. Their relationship is characterized by mutual affection and concern. Hayate is shown to be protective and gently teasing with her, once asking her to be careful on her missions following her promotion to Anbu, as the tasks would become more dangerous. After his death, Yugao is frequently seen mourning at the village's memorial stone, where his name is engraved, and she vows to avenge him. His death also affects his peers, including Kakashi Hatake, who expresses sorrow upon learning of it.

While his role in the original story concludes early, the anime adaptation expands his narrative during the Fourth Great Ninja War. In this arc, Kabuto Yakushi resurrects Hayate using the Impure World Reincarnation technique, forcing him to fight against his own village. In this state, he is sent to steal a scroll containing the corpses of allied ninja. During this mission, he confronts Yugao, who is part of the team guarding the scroll. Though controlled by Kabuto, Hayate demonstrates tremendous willpower. He manages to resist the command to kill his former comrades and specifically his lover. In their final duel, he briefly regains control, allowing Yugao to land a fatal blow that seals his soul, freeing him from the reincarnation and allowing him to return to the afterlife. This development highlights his enduring loyalty and love for his village and Yugao, even beyond death.

Regarding his abilities, Hayate is a specialist in kenjutsu, the art of the sword. He wields a katana as his primary weapon and possesses considerable speed. His most notable technique is the Dance of the Crescent Moon. This is an advanced, high-level swordsmanship technique where the user creates multiple physical shadow clones to attack the enemy from all angles, while the original user performs a simultaneous strike from the target's blind spot. Baki, an experienced Jonin from the Sand Village, acknowledges the skill required to master this technique at such a young age. Official databooks rate his abilities consistently, with his highest stats in ninjutsu and intelligence, while his stamina is noted as his lowest attribute, consistent with his frail appearance.
