TV-Series
Description
Kimimaro Kaguya is a character known as the sole survivor of the Kaguya clan, a family of battle-loving warriors. Born with a rare kekkei genkai called Shikotsumyaku, or the Dead Bone Pulse, which allowed him to manipulate his own skeletal structure, Kimimaro was feared by his own father, the clan patriarch. Because of his extraordinary and unnerving abilities, he was kept locked in a cage for most of his childhood, only released when the clan needed him to fight. The Kaguya clan was eventually wiped out when they launched a reckless attack on Kirigakure, underestimating the village's defenses. Kimimaro survived the massacre and wandered alone until he was found by Orochimaru, a rogue ninja and one of the series' primary antagonists.
Kimimaro's personality stands in stark contrast to the violent nature of his clan. He is a calm, quiet, and soft-spoken individual who does not take pleasure in battle or killing. Instead, he views his formidable combat skills merely as a tool to be useful to others. As a child, he was gentle and did not wish to hurt anyone, showing an appreciation for flowers. His core defining trait is his absolute and unwavering loyalty to Orochimaru, who he sees as his savior. Orochimaru was the first person to show him care and give his life purpose, leading Kimimaro to develop a devotion that borders on religious zealotry or seeing his master as a father figure. He genuinely believes that his only reason for existing is to serve Orochimaru's dreams and ambitions. Despite his calm demeanor, he can show a cruel side, expressing extreme distaste for what he considers weak or trash ninja, and is willing to kill them even if they are his allies. He rarely shows emotion, but he is deeply affected when his faith in Orochimaru is insulted, as seen when Gaara's words cause him to lose focus in battle. He was also shown crying quietly upon learning that his failing health had made him useless to his master.
Kimimaro's primary motivation is to fulfill Orochimaru's wishes, seeing himself as a vessel for his master's will. Orochimaru had intended to use Kimimaro's body as his next host, primarily to acquire the rare Shikotsumyaku kekkei genkai. However, Kimimaro was afflicted by an unknown and terminal illness, which forced Orochimaru to abandon this plan. In the story, his role is that of a powerful antagonist during the Sasuke Recovery arc. When the Sound Four, a group of Orochimaru's elite ninja, fail to retrieve Sasuke Uchiha quickly enough, the ailing Kimimaro is manipulated by Kabuto Yakushi into leaving his medical care to complete the mission, knowing it will likely cost him his life. He intercepts the Konoha ninja pursuing Sasuke, single-handedly proving himself to be a far greater threat than any of his allies.
Kimimaro's key relationships are defined by his connection to Orochimaru and a unique friendship with a character named Jugo. His relationship with Orochimaru is the most significant, as he is utterly devoted to his master and finds his entire purpose through him. His friendship with Jugo is notable as Jugo is a test subject whose homicidal rage is said to be controllable only by Kimimaro. Kimimaro felt a kinship with Jugo and convinced him to become one of Orochimaru's subjects, hoping it would help control his violent outbursts. His role as the leader of the Sound Five, a group formed when he easily defeated the original four members known as the Sound Four, further demonstrates his overwhelming power in relation to his peers.
Kimimaro's development is tragically cut short by his illness. He begins as a caged and unwanted child, transforms into a fiercely loyal follower with a newfound purpose, and ultimately succumbs not to an opponent, but to his own failing body. In his final battle, he fights against Naruto Uzumaki, Rock Lee, and finally Gaara. Despite his body being on the verge of death, his sheer willpower allows him to move and fight at an incredible level. He gains the upper hand against Gaara, nearly killing him, but dies at the very moment he is about to deliver the final blow, his illness finally catching up with him. He is later resurrected during the Fourth Shinobi World War through Kabuto's Impure World Reincarnation technique, where he fights as a reanimated soldier before being released.
Kimimaro possesses a range of notable abilities centered on his kekkei genkai, Shikotsumyaku. This ability allows him to control the calcium in his bones, making them denser than steel and allowing him to regenerate and regrow them rapidly. He can pull out his own bones to use as weapons, such as swords, whips, or projectiles fired from his fingertips like bullets. His fighting style, which he refers to as dances, includes several powerful techniques. The Dance of the Camellia uses a short bone sword for rapid thrusts. The Dance of the Willow sprouts bone blades from any part of his body. The Dance of the Clematis involves pulling out his spine to use as a whip-like vine and forming a massive drill-like lance. The Dance of the Seedling Fern, one of his most powerful moves, causes a massive forest of sharp bone spikes to erupt from the ground. In addition to his clan's abilities, Kimimaro bears the Cursed Seal of Earth, one of Orochimaru's strongest seals. When he activates its second level, his skin turns a dark grey, he grows a long tail, and large bone spines protrude from his back, dramatically increasing his strength, speed, and durability. His extreme determination also acts as a notable ability, as he is able to will his dying body to continue moving and fighting long after it should have given out.
