Description
Kanoe is the younger sister of Princess Hinoto, a figure of great importance who serves as the Dreamseer for the Dragons of Heaven. Unlike her sister, Kanoe does not possess the ability to see the future on her own, but she has the power to enter and view the dreams of others, a skill she uses to observe the visions of her sister and other characters. She works as a secretary in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, a position that keeps her close to the center of political power without drawing undue attention to her true activities.

Kanoe serves as a primary antagonist and the leader of the Dragons of Earth, the group of seven individuals whose mission is to destroy humanity and allow the planet to heal itself. Her motivations are complex and vary depending on the version of the story, though a consistent theme is her connection to her sister. In the television anime series, Kanoe is driven by a deep-seated resentment, believing that Hinoto was always favored and treated better for her superior powers. Kanoe’s goal is to ensure that her sister's tragic prophetic dreams of the world's end come true, causing Hinoto the ultimate suffering. In stark contrast, the film and manga portray a more sympathetic motive. In these versions, Kanoe acts out of love for Hinoto. She wishes to free her sister from what she sees as a prison of being a Dreamseer, a role that forces Hinoto to sacrifice her freedom and endure constant pain. By making her sister’s prophecies fail, Kanoe hopes to strip Hinoto of her powers and grant her the liberty she deserves, even if it means defying fate itself.

Kanoe’s key relationships are central to her character. The most significant is her fraught and deeply intertwined bond with her sister, Hinoto. This relationship is the engine of her actions, whether those actions are fueled by hate or love. She also has a close, intimate relationship with Yuto Kigai, a powerful Dragon of Earth who acts as her confidant and enforcer. Through her role as the leader of the Dragons of Earth, she also interacts directly with other members of the group, such as Satsuki and, briefly, the series’ protagonist Kamui Shiro after his transformation.

Her character development is defined by the tragic conclusion of her quest for her sister. In the manga, as the end of the world draws near, Kanoe enters Hinoto’s dream to free her directly. However, she is confronted and killed by the dark, inner self of Hinoto, a manifestation of the very power and entrapment she sought to end. In the film adaptation, her fate is similarly tragic but more direct. She is killed by Fuma Monou, her own side's Kamui, but not before she can finally confess her true, loving reasons for her actions to a heartbroken Hinoto, dying peacefully in her sister’s arms. These different deaths each serve to underline the central irony of her life: her desperate attempts to either ruin or save her sister ultimately lead to her own destruction, leaving Hinoto to mourn the sister she never stopped caring for.
