Description
Garma Zabi is the fourth child and youngest son of Degwin Sodo Zabi, the sovereign ruler of the Principality of Zeon. As a member of the Zabi family, which leads the rebellion against the Earth Federation, Garma holds the prestigious rank of colonel and serves as the commander of the Zeon Earth Attack Force during the One Year War. Born in U.C. 0059, he is twenty years old at the time of his death.
In terms of personality, Garma is portrayed as handsome, charming, and genuinely popular among the people of Zeon, a stark contrast to his siblings, who are often seen as more calculating or physically imposing. His father, Degwin, dotes on him as a clear favorite, and his older brother Dozle also shows him great affection. Beneath this glamorous exterior, however, Garma is defined by a deep-seated need for validation and a fierce determination to prove that his high-ranking position is earned through his own merit rather than simply inherited. He is somewhat naive and sheltered due to his privileged upbringing, which makes him trusting to a fault and often ignorant of the cruel machinations of war and politics that surround him. This purity manifests in his personal life, where he is genuinely kind, well-mannered, and possesses a romantic idealism, even going so far as to promise his lover, Icelina Eschonbach, that he would abandon Zeon for her.
Garma’s primary motivation stems from his desire to live up to the Zabi family name and to be acknowledged by his siblings, particularly his older sister Kycilia, who was instrumental in assigning him to his command on Earth. He is eager to become a hero for his people and to prove that his military successes are not merely the result of nepotism. This drive, combined with his loyalty to his family, dictates his actions throughout the war.
His role in the story is centered on the Earth front, where he commands Zeon's occupation of North America from a base in New Yark. When his old friend from the military academy, Char Aznable, arrives on Earth in pursuit of the Federation warship White Base, Garma eagerly offers his full support, seeing an opportunity to distinguish himself. He leads several attacks against the White Base, often personally piloting a Dopp fighter or commanding his Gaw assault carrier. Tragically, his fate is sealed by the betrayal of Char, who is secretly Casval Rem Deikun, the son of Zeon’s founder, and who has sworn a vendetta against the Zabi family for their usurpation of power.
The relationship with Char Aznable is the most significant and tragic in Garma’s life. They were classmates and roommates at the Zeon military academy, where Garma considered Char his closest friend and trusted him implicitly, often stating that Char would be his right hand. Unbeknownst to Garma, Char views him merely as a tool for revenge. During a decisive battle in the ruined city of Seattle, Char deliberately feeds Garma false tactical information, leading his fleet into a devastating ambush by the White Base. In his final moments, as his Gaw carrier is torn apart by enemy fire, a desperate and enraged Garma realizes the truth of Char's treachery when Char confesses his vengeance over the radio. Refusing to die without a fight, Garma takes control of his ship and attempts a kamikaze run on the White Base, ultimately failing and perishing in a blaze of glory with a cry of “Sieg Zeon!” on his lips.
Another key relationship is with Icelina Eschonbach, the daughter of the former mayor of New Yark. Despite the enmity between their peoples, Garma falls deeply in love with her, and this romance represents his private desire for a life outside the shadow of his family and the war.
Garma’s development is cut short by his early death, but his life is marked by a trajectory from a privileged student to a military leader tested by combat. Notably, prior to the One Year War, he was used by Char to instigate the ‘Dawn Rebellion,’ a cadet uprising against Federation forces that Garma led, which made him a media hero in Zeon but also deepened his reliance on Char. His death serves as a major turning point, demoralizing the Zeon military command and being exploited by his elder brother Gihren for propaganda purposes in a famous funeral speech intended to rally the nation to continue the war.
Regarding his notable abilities, Garma is a trained and capable soldier. While his skills as a strategic commander are debated, he is known to be a competent pilot of both Dopp fighters and his personal MS-06FS Zaku II, often leading his forces from the front lines in an effort to prove his courage. His authority, however, may have been largely nominal, with effective command on Earth possibly residing with other forces, yet his death undeniably threw the Zeon Earth Attack Force into disarray.
