Description
Casval Rem Daikun, most widely known by his pseudonym Char Aznable, is one of the central figures of the Universal Century timeline. Born the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, the founder of the Republic of Zeon, his life was irrevocably altered by the death of his father, which he and his sister Artesia believed was an assassination orchestrated by the Zabi family. After being sent into hiding on Earth and later the Texas colony, Casval assumed the identity of his friend, Char Aznable, after the real Char was killed in a targeted attack meant for him. Using this new name, he entered the Zeon Military Academy, beginning a calculated path of revenge against the Zabi family.
As a person, Char Aznable is defined by a complex and often contradictory nature. He is a man of immense charisma, intelligence, and skill, which allows him to inspire intense loyalty in his subordinates and manipulate his enemies with ease. He is a natural leader, often seen as cool, calculating, and pragmatic. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a deep well of emotion, including a burning desire for revenge, a romantic idealism about the future of humanity in space, and a growing sense of despair and nihilism. His personality is marked by a deep-seated need for a maternal figure, a psychological trait that profoundly affects his relationships, most notably with the Newtype Lalah Sune, whom he describes as a mother he never had. He can be both a heroic mentor and a ruthless antagonist, his actions driven by a potent combination of lofty ideals and personal vendettas.
Char's motivations evolve significantly over time. Initially, his primary driving force is revenge against the Zabi family for his father's death. To achieve this, he rises through the ranks of the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War, even manipulating events to ensure the death of his friend, Garma Zabi. As the war concludes and he exacts his final vengeance on Kycilia Zabi, his focus shifts toward a broader goal: the liberation of Spacenoids from what he sees as the oppressive gravity of Earth. During the Gryps Conflict, as Quattro Bajeena of the Anti-Earth Union Group, he fights for reform within the Earth Sphere. However, witnessing the corruption and endless cycle of war leads him to profound despair. By the time of the Second Neo Zeon Movement, his goal has radicalized; he seeks to force all of humanity into space by dropping the asteroid Axis onto Earth, believing that this cataclysm will forcibly evolve humanity into Newtypes and sever their connection to a corrupt planet.
Throughout the story, Char serves as a rival, mentor, and antagonist. In Mobile Suit Gundam, he is the primary antagonist and the shadowy rival to the Federation's pilot, Amuro Ray. In Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, he becomes a mentor to the new protagonist, Kamille Bidan, and a leading figure in the AEUG under the alias Quattro Bajeena. Finally, in Char's Counterattack, he is the central antagonist, the leader of Neo Zeon opposed by his old rival, Amuro Ray, and the task force Londo Bell. His key relationships are fundamental to his character. His relationship with Amuro Ray is a bitter and legendary rivalry born of clashing ideologies and the shared trauma over Lalah Sune's death. His relationship with his sister, Sayla Mass (Artesia), is distant but carries a lingering familial bond. Lalah Sune is perhaps the most important figure in his life, a Newtype who he loved and whose death at Amuro's hands cemented his hatred and despair. Other relationships, such as his brief mentorship of Kamille Bidan and his romantic ties to Haman Karn and Nanai Miguel, further highlight his influence on those around him and his often-troubled approach to personal connections.
Char's character development is a tragic arc from a charismatic revolutionary to a disillusioned extremist. In his youth, he is a focused avenger. In the original series, he is a man torn between his mission of revenge and his growing awareness of his Newtype potential. In Zeta Gundam, he attempts to shed his past and fight for a cause larger than himself, yet he ultimately fails to stop the cycle of conflict, leading to the mental collapse of Kamille and reinforcing his pessimism. By Char's Counterattack, he has fully embraced his role as a fallen hero, abandoning compromise in favor of a desperate, violent solution to humanity's problems. His disappearance alongside Amuro Ray while attempting to stop his own plan is a final, ambiguous act that suggests a complex legacy.
Notable abilities include his exceptional skill as a mobile suit pilot, earning him the feared nickname The Red Comet for his ability to destroy five Federation warships in a single battle with a Zaku II. He is a highly capable tactician and strategist, able to formulate and execute complex plans that often have multiple layers. He is also a powerful Newtype, developing psychic empathy and sensory abilities that allow him to connect with other Newtypes like Lalah and Amuro. Furthermore, he is a master of disguise and identity, seamlessly assuming different personas such as the vengeful Char, the righteous Quattro Bajeena, and the despotic leader of Neo Zeon to achieve his goals.
